Windows 11 Needs a Windows 10 Mode

Windows 11 Needs a Windows 10 Mode

Windows 11 is here. As with every previous mega-update to the desktop operating system of record over the years, the new interface has been met with dissent. It’s no surprise that Twitter is full of outrage over the redesign—and, it must be admitted, some praise, too. The record will show that I’ve never been a hater of new Windows features. I even found things to like in the disastrous Windows 8 release. I was an avid Cortana user, at least while she could still do useful things, such as shut down the PC or control music. But a significant difference is that, at least with Windows 8, Microsoft was creating something original and new. I know that software and all other forms of art borrow from others’ recent work, but the…

Affordable 8K TVs Are Coming, But You Shouldn’t Buy One

Affordable 8K TVs Are Coming, But You Shouldn’t Buy One

Be saw lots of new 8K TVs at CES in January, with some coming from vendors known for making affordable models, such as TCL. That means 2021 is likely to be the year we start seeing 8K TVs hit the market at prices that far more people can realistically consider—we’re talking under five digits! Don’t freak out about replacing your still-new 4K TV just yet, though. 8K AT CES TCL’s announcement that its 2021 6-Series TVs will be entirely 8K is one of the more notable pieces of news from this year’s show, as the 6-Series has long been a PCMag favorite for offering high quality at a reasonable price. That said, TCL hasn’t yet announced pricing for its 6-Series TVs, and it noted that 2020 models will still be available this…

Building Israel’s first Shermans

As the future state of Israel approached independence in early 1948, acquisition teams scoured Europe for weapons in preparation for an expected conflict with neighboring Arab states. In addition to patching together a few barely functional Sherman tanks from British scrap yards in Palestine, the Israelis clandestinely purchased a number of better running tanks from depots in Italy. Only three Shermans were ready in time for the War of Independence. These three tanks intrigued me, being the Shermaholic that I am, and one, Tamar, is well-documented in photos. Using those and other documents as reference, I set about building one of the other two Shermans. I figured it would be an interesting project because, like the real thing, the model would be an amalgamation of different Sherman variants. The crew ISRAELI TANKERS wore…

HOW TO LAUNCH IN A CROSSWIND

HOW TO LAUNCH IN A CROSSWIND

When you learn to fly, you are told it is dangerous to launch with the wind beyond 45 degrees off “straight up the slope”. Crosswinds cause turbulence. So why would you launch in a crosswind? In hike-and-fly, you often cannot reach a perfect launch slope. It might have taken hours to get to your chosen peak, and the weather might have changed. The forecast might be wrong. Or you just need to get off the mountain before the rain comes in. If you can do it safely, there’s no reason to restrict yourself to “perfect direction”. But it can be risky to ignore the dangers of the crosswind. So what to do? In this article I’ll show you how to keep yourself safe on a steep slope. Here are 10 steps to help…

SAGITTARIUS 23rd November to 21st December Your tendency this month will probably be to take things easy and be less sociable than usual. That’s fine, but make sure you don’t sequester yourself under the duvet to the point where you don’t get anything done! It’s also a good time to sort things out with a friend, lover or ex. Do what it takes to clear the air. CAPRICORN 22nd December to 20th January Weigh up what you really, really want. More free time? Are you willing to work harder, if that’s what is required to achieve your professional goals? Is family your first priority at the moment, and if so, are you living your life accordingly? The eclipse is urging you to get your priorities straight. AQUARIUS 21st January to 19th February You are focusing a lot on…

What happens in Skirt Club, stays in Skirt Club

it’s gone midnight and I’m standing naked in a plush penthouse, drinking in the hedonistic scene before me with a mixture of trepidation and lust. There are tangled limbs and groans of pleasure; a mass of sensual, orgasming women of many different shapes and sizes, all fuelled by bi-curious desire. This is Skirt Club, an exclusively female network that champions female empowerment and sexual discovery, with branches in NYC, Sydney, Berlin, LA, San Francisco, Miami, Shanghai and Melbourne, as well as an annual party weekend in Ibiza. I’m at one of its signature events in London – pre-lockdown – to explore my own growing bi-curiosity. My husband, James*, who knows I’m here, is miles away putting our two young children to bed. You discover the secret location of the party the day…

THE FUTURE OF SCALE MODELING

THE FUTURE OF SCALE MODELING

Asking hobbyists about the future of scale modeling can sometimes feel like opening Pandora’s box. You aren’t quite sure what you’re going to get, but you can bet that it isn’t all going to be good. Prognosticating the hobby’s future makes for lively debate, and it’s not bad to take stock of where we are and where the hobby is headed. Shifts in the Golden Age “It’s getting to the point where almost anything you can imagine is being produced by kit manufacturers, which is why I feel we’re in the Golden Age of styrene modeling for now, “says George Seletas, contest chief at WonderFest USA, the leading show for sci-fi, fantasy, and horror modelers. He’s not alone. As one of scale modeling’s chief proponents, and certainly not blind to the challenges the hobby…

How long must a point-to-point layout be? Q What is the smallest point-to-point layout that doesn’t look like just a section of test track? How long does a shelf layout have to be to look like a working operation could be taking place? Richard Helton, Meridian, Idaho A That’s a matter of taste and perception, not something that can be quantified in feet and inches. If I say an 8-foot shelf layout is long enough to look realistic, does that mean a 7-foot 10-inch one isn’t? More important than the layout’s size is how that space is treated. Let’s look at some factors that can enhance or detract from a shelf layout’s realism. You mention the layout as being part of a “working operation.” For a layout to be realistically operable, it needs three…

MacBooks The most powerful Pro lineup ever created

After what feels like a lifetime of waiting, Apple has finally unveiled its next-generation MacBook Pro line-up, bringing the power of M1 and stepping it up a gear. The new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips bring Apple’s vision for a world beyond Intel to life, no doubt sparking the interest of creatives around the world. Apple has finally put the Pro back into the MacBook. MINDBLOWING CAPABILITIES There has been much speculation about the new MacBook Pro range, and though Apple took a little longer to give its 14-inch and 16-inch models the same love as the Mac mini and iPad Pro, the wait has undoubtedly been worth it. Rather than putting the standard M1 chip into the new Pro range, Apple has taken things to a whole new level, revolutionizing…

Is DaaS the Killer App for Hybrid Work?

Is DaaS the Killer App for Hybrid Work?

It seems that hybrid work, the “new normal,” might be pushing desktop as a service (DaaS) into the rank of front-and-center business tool, up from the minor curiosity it was only two years ago. That notion is due to some sudden and formidable market movement, most recently from Microsoft. Microsoft has had a virtual desktop service for a while—Azure Virtual Desktop, formerly called Windows Virtual Desktop. A rumor recently mongered by Mary Jo Foley, the queen of Microsoft leaks, has it that Microsoft will be announcing yet another DaaS development next week during Microsoft’s Inspire virtual conference. The new service will probably be called Cloud PC, and instead of supplanting Azure VD, it’ll be its own product aimed at general businesses and available as part of a Microsoft 365 subscription. Azure…

Massless momentum

Massless momentum

Q HOW CAN A PHOTON OF LIGHT CARRY ENERGY BUT ALSO BE CONSIDERED MASSLESS? DOESN’T EINSTEIN’S E = MC-MAKE THAT IMPOSSIBLE? Robert Bobo Pullman, Washington AIEinstein’s famous mass-energy equivalence equation, or E = mc2, is actually a special case of a slightly longer formula known as the energy-momentum relation, which is written out as E2 = p2c2 + m2c4. This equation relates energy (E) to rest mass (m), the speed of light (c), and momentum (p), which is the key to how photons can carry energy but have no mass. When a particle is at rest, it has no momentum and the equation simplifies to the more familiar E = mc2. But if a particle has no mass, the equation becomes E = pc. But wait, you might be asking, how can a particle…

After Chernobyl

After Chernobyl

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 remains the largest reactor meltdown in history. Thousands of people worked to contain the damage from the catastrophe, many of them dying or suffering long-term severe health problems resulting from radiation exposure. And it’s no surprise the local firefighters were among the first to lend a hand. The history of Chernobyl intrigued me. I’d seen photos of vehicle graveyards from the incident, and when ICM released its 1/35 scale AC-40-137A Soviet fire truck, the choice was made for me. As an armor modeler, I found the subject both fascinating and challenging. The ICM kit is good, but not perfect, and the solid rubber tires were the worst. I replaced the kit’s wheels and tires with aftermarket resin parts from Armor 35 and Miniarm, but that…

WHAT WE REALLY, REALLY WANT

‘WHAT MAKES YOU COME ALIVE?’ That’s the question Charlotte Fox Weber longed to be asked in therapy. She wanted the opportunity to explore her hidden ambitions and ‘banished longings’, and what they might reveal. Which is why she began searching for answers herself, as a psychotherapist, speaking to thousands of people about their deepest desires. Luckily for us, Fox Weber is now sharing her findings in a new book, What We Want: A Journey Through Twelve Of Our Deepest Desires. By guiding the reader through case studies from her therapy work she shows us why we pretend to want the things we don’t and struggle to admit the things we do: freedom in a relationship, more attention from a parent, to win, to connect, to belong or to control. By the final…

MUSIC: CLIMBING THE CHARTS TO BECOME NUMBER ONE

Though Apple Music may still be playing catchup to Spotify in terms of users, new data from the Mechanical Licensing Collective has revealed Apple is the industry leader when it comes to royalties, demonstrating the company’s commitment to paying talent. As Apple continues to expand its services, the future looks bright, with new Music innovations coming their way. AT THE TOP SPOT In a perhaps unsurprising announcement, Apple was named in mid-February as the biggest contributor of music streaming royalties in the world, ahead of rivals Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube. According to the Mechanical Licensing Collective, streaming services have paid out more than $424,384,787 in revenue to musicians and labels to date, with Apple Music contributing the biggest share with $163,338,890 paid out. The figure represents “historical unmatched royalties from digital…

What we need to do is come to terms with new tech’s ability to “know us.” It has to [know us], to serve us, but [tech’s knowledge of us] can also be used for any number of things we would rather wasn’t used for. We need to identify those things and pass legislation to forbid it being used as such. Of course, that would require elected officials representing the will and needs of their constituents over those of special interests in whose back pockets these politicians reside.—Moresuo This is the stuff from The Jetsons that we wanted years ago. Now that we’re getting some of it, people are complaining.…

Van Dyke Parks: The thing you must realise about Lowell George is he was a sponge. He absorbed Western music, Eastern music, classical music, the blues, he played the piccolo. He was into absurdism. He was like a goat – he just ate up everything! Fred Tackett: When I first met Lowell he was studying sitar and shakuhachi [Japanese flute] at Ravi Shankar’s Kinnara School of Music in LA. He’d already played in [Hollywood garage rock band] The Factory. But he told me, “I only play Indian music now.” Then the next thing I know he’s singing in The Standells… and then he was playing with Frank Zappa and the Mothers [in 1968]. Can you be 30% HAPPIER in 30 days?

I get a sharp reminder that I need to cheer up when, on the school run, I tell my teenage son that I’m feeling worried about something. And he says, ‘But Mum, you’re always worried about something.’ I hadn’t even realised I was low. But looking back, the last few months have gone like this: wake up at 5am worrying, school run, work, fight today’s fire, cook, clean, bed, wake up at 5am worrying. Then there’s the hard-to-get-your-head around stuff: Ukraine. The recession. The cliché is that life is a rollercoaster, but this feels more like when I went on the waltzer at Winter Wonderland wearing gloves so slippery I spent the whole ride feeling as if I was about to fall off. You might feel the same: a recent survey…

How JUNO unmasked JUPITER

How JUNO unmasked JUPITER

WHENEVER JUPITER, thunderbolt-wielding lord of the gods in ancient Roman myth, misbehaved with the ladies, there was one person he most feared: his long-suffering yet ferocious wife, the goddess Juno. It was said that Jupiter conjured fog to hide his illicit liaisons from his wife. But Juno always saw through her faithless husband’s philandering to reveal his every misdeed. Like its mythical namesake, the planet Jupiter guards its secrets with jealous pride, its bulk swaddled in thick clouds. For the last six years, though, a spacecraft bearing Juno’s name has watched Jupiter from orbit, stripping away its secrets and furnishing new insights into its interior and evolution. This robotic Juno has answered many longstanding questions and uncovered new riddles to challenge us. Its onboard camera, JunoCam, has turned Jupiter from a planet…

GIUDICE ATENIESE ATENE 380 A.C.

‘TANTALIZING’ RESULTS OF 2 EXPERIMENTS DEFY PHYSICS RULEBOOK

‘TANTALIZING’ RESULTS OF 2 EXPERIMENTS DEFY PHYSICS RULEBOOK

Preliminary results from two experiments suggest something could be wrong with the basic way physicists think the universe works, a prospect that has the field of particle physics both baffled and thrilled. The tiniest particles aren’t quite doing what is expected of them when spun around two different long-running experiments in the United States and Europe. The confounding results — if proven right — reveal major problems with the rulebook physicists use to describe and understand how the universe works at the subatomic level. Theoretical physicist Matthew McCullough of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, said untangling the mysteries could “take us beyond our current understanding of nature.” The rulebook, called the Standard Model, was developed about 50 years ago. Experiments performed over decades affirmed over and again that its descriptions…

THERE ARE STORIES THAT WE TELL. AND THERE ARE stories that we keep, until we can’t. Keli Burns, 36, is a college administrator and married suburban Chicago mom. Online she posts about her son’s bowling skills and, for her daughter, reminders about Girl Scout cookie season. When Burns mentions her father, she describes herself as a daddy’s girl until he passed away suddenly when she was 18. What she thought she’d never share is that in 2002, a Minneapolis police officer compressed her father’s neck until he died, less than two miles from where a different police officer pressed George Floyd into the pavement nearly 20 years later. The medical examiner ruled her father’s death a homicide. There was no trial. “I’ve been contemplating if I was going to post this or not,”…

Falling for Fruit

Posh Spice Poached pears are an elegant dessert on their own. But place them on a layer of velvety almond-frangipane custard atop delicate pastry, and they’re fit for tea with the Bridgertons. The key to this labor of love is breaking it down into a few steps. You can make and freeze the laminated pastry dough up to two weeks ahead of time. Poach the pears the day before assembling the tarts (or at least four hours prior, so they can soak up the lemon-zest, cinnamon, and vanilla flavors in the syrup). When you’re ready to bake, thaw the dough, make rounds with a cookie cutter, mix and spread on the frangipane cream, and nestle in the main events. Forward Flip Consider this another great reason to go apple-picking this September—or a fun…

THE DIGITAL ART OF DESIGN

THE DIGITAL ART OF DESIGN

Designing a paraglider without a computer is unthinkable nowadays. But for most of us the design software is mainly appreciated for the colourful images it creates. However, new developments in software mean our gliders get much better, much faster. As pilots we don’t immediately notice all the benefits that computer simulations bring to our paragliders. But you will have noticed the quick evolution of our equipment – and we’ve seen some real revolutions lately. For example easy to fly two-liners, safe EN-A gliders which nonetheless have proper performance, and much lighter equipment that is still strong and durable. For all this, computer simulation was very helpful, if not crucial. Paragliding design by computer first involves determining the shape of the wing. Then it’s checking the airflow around it, which most importantly determines…

Build a 3D-PRINTED SUPERHERO

Modelers have been using 3D-printed parts for more than a decade, and the quality of the printers and the items produced by them have continued to improve. While the technology hasn’t replaced traditional plastic and resin kits, it does allow us to build some subjects mainstream manufacturers are unlikely to produce. Such was the case when I went looking for a kit of Raven, my favorite member of DC Comic’s Teen Titans. Rather than a kit, I found several sellers offering files that could be fed into a 3D printer to produce parts. After finding one I liked, I purchased the files and had a friend with a high-resolution printer make the parts for me in UV-curing resin. FINAL THOUGHTS I ASSEMBLED THE VARIOUS components with two-part epoxy over the course of 24…

Enhancing models with 3D PRINTING

With 3D printing, you can easily design, produce, and tweak custom-made parts, producing as many exact copies as you need. I wanted to depict an obsolete armored fighting suit from the Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K) universe modified and repurposed to work in a nuclear waste-disposal facility. In Ma.K, the combatants are fighting over an Earth recovering from the devastation of a nuclear war, so I figured war-weary equipment would be redeployed for cleanup duty. As the basis of my conversion, I used Nitto’s 1/20 scale Panzer Kampf Anzug Ausf H1 Heinrich kit from the mid-1980s.

REWRITING TRADITIONS

When I was growing up, my Pakistani family never particularly celebrated Christmas. After I married, I thought it fairer to spend the holidays with my husband’s English family instead, for whom Christmas appeared more traditional. And so, we fell into a routine; Christmas week with my in-laws, then stopping at my mother’s for New Year. After our children were born, we pretended it wasn’t that hard to make the six-hour round trip to my in-laws’ rural cottage with a newborn and a toddler. We were bone-weary, but everyone expected us. Though it was always a joy to see them, the broken nights were more difficult away from home and it was harder to console our small children. By the time we reached my mother’s house, our sons were usually overtired and…

Making a Mining Guild TIE FIGHTE

Star Wars possibly contains the most iconic spaceships of any science-fiction franchise in history. From the X-wing fighter to the Executor-class Super Star Destroyer, and everything in between, even people who aren’t Star Wars fans recognize the ships. One of the easiest silhouettes to identify is the ubiquitous, eminently disposable TIE fighter. Dubbed “brutalist terror-balls” by author Chuck Wendig, TIE fighters scream through space and swarm Rebel ships, dying as often as dealing death. We’ve seen many iterations of the TIE fighter. However, I thought the Mining Guild TIE unique ever since it appeared in the animated TV series Star Wars Rebels. With notched solar-collector wings and bright yellow paint, the TIE fighter/mg (its official designation), catches the eye and holds it. I also wanted to add the sensor arrays that…

Oura Ring: A New Kind of Fitness Tracker

Oura Ring: A New Kind of Fitness Tracker

Fitness trackers have become a lot more attractive over the years, but no matter the design, they tend to stand out. If you’re looking for a more discreet alternative that’s comfortable to wear 24/7, you might be interested in the Oura Ring. It looks like jewelry at a glance, but the Oura is far smarter than your average ring. This water-resistant wearable features heart rate, respiration, and body temperature sensors, as well as a 3D accelerometer to measure your activity, sleep, and recovery, and it works with a companion app to help make sense of your data and offer insights to foster healthy habits. The Oura’s ability to track workouts is pretty basic compared with a wrist-worn model, but it offers comprehensive sleep tracking and is more comfortable to wear…

Standing TALL

Like a knight in shining armour: that’s how I felt closing the Louis Vuitton cruise show in San Diego this past May. As the sun set behind the beautiful, brutalist Salk Institute, casting long shadows on the concrete runway, I walked out wearing a floorsweeping silver coat – my legs as golden as the early evening light, shimmering beneath metallic shorts – leading the way for the army of models behind me. Everything about the show was incredible: the clothes, the setting, that I had been asked to lead the finale, that I was there at all. It has been almost 10 years since I was rushed into hospital, just hours from death, with toxic shock syndrome (TSS) – a condition caused by an excess of staphylococcus aureus bacteria in the…

Using SUPERGLUE

Using SUPERGLUE

Even if you’ve only built one or two models, you are no doubt aware that various types of glue are needed for different situations. For me, superglue is a critical part of my workbench, and it should be on yours, if it isn’t now. Superglue has applications that no other adhesive can approach. It is the first choice for attaching photo-etched metal (PE) to plastic, resin, or other PE, and works in most instances to attach resin to pretty much any material. Some modelers use it as the basic glue for assembly. Given all that, superglue is one tool that I depend on almost every time I sit down to model. Types of superglue Superglue comes in a variety of viscosities, from very thin to a thick gel, and each has its…

HyperBull

HyperBull

To commemorate the 100th birthday of Lamborghini’s founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, the company released the Centenario LP770-4, an all-wheel drive hypercar based on the Aventador powered by a 6.5-liter V12 creating 770 hp. With only 40 built — 20 coupes and 20 roadsters — customers were given a plethora of personalization options. At $1.9 million, who would buy this car? Well, if you’re young, wealthy, and looking to grab attention, this loud and extremely limited Lambo is for you. Alpha Models’ 1/24 scale resin Centenario definitely brings this attitude to car models. The company focuses on European supercars and hypercars and the kits come with extensive photo-etched metal (PE) parts and decals for detailing. And seeing that this was a car built for a special occasion, I didn’t want to give it…

DOMANDE & RISPOSTE

How to finally come out of hiding

‘When a marathon runner crosses the finish line, it is the end of the race, but it also marks the beginning of a process of recovery,’ says Anna Mathur, psychotherapist, speaker and author of Know Your Worth (Piaktus). ‘We need to look at the next few months in the same way. After a 15-month, marathon-like slog through lockdowns, tiers and social-distancing rules, there should be a period of rehabilitation and recovery during which we process the emotional and physical impact that this has had on us.’ If you’re anything like me, this analogy will come as quite a comfort. Because while there’s definitely a sense of jubilation about the return of ‘normal’ life, the feeling of trepidation about what actually comes next is just as strong. Some people are even calling this…

Holograms Are (Maybe, Finally) Real: Light Field Labs’ SolidLight

In front of me is a wristwatch. Somehow, it’s floating in the air. It’s shiny, spotless, and seemingly solid. Light reflects across the metal timepiece like it’s on display at a jewelry store, ready to be handled and bought. But then I get closer and try to touch the floating watch. My hand passes through it and feels only air. In reality, I’m staring at a wave of light that’s converging and scattering in mid-air. A display behind the watch is simply beaming the light in a way my eyes can’t help but interpret as real. I’m staring at a hologram, the first of its kind, according to San Jose-based Light Field Lab. The watch is actually an image made up of 2.5 billion pixels. All those pixels are now in…

Bill Gates

This pandemic seems a little different in that the U.S. doesn’t seem to be serving as a model for how to best respond. What has been responsible for that? If you score the U.S., our domestic response has been weak but can improve. Our R&D response—funding vaccines and therapeutics—has been the best in the world. And then in the third category, making those tools available to the world, we’re hoping this supplemental bill—1% to the resources—would be enough to have a pretty dramatic effect and get other countries to give. So that one’s incomplete still. How do you think government leaders can better work with public-health leaders to learn from the lessons of Ebola, HIV and previous influenza outbreaks? Well, it is amazing, the contrast to Ebola—the U.S. allocated money and…

Alien life

Alien life

Bob’s recent book, Earth-Shattering (Little, Brown and Company, 2019), explores the greatest cataclysms that have shaken the universe. Just briefly, let’s be unafraid to question cosmology’s most basic assumptions. Let’s start with the Drake equation, which estimates the number of communicating alien intelligences in the galaxy. Its fame has grown, since its 1961 creation, to virtually rival Einstein’s E=mc2. Frank Drake’s brainchild became one of the key tenets of astrobiology and still shapes efforts to search for alien life, including the James Webb Space Telescope’s plan to characterize habitable exoplanets. Recently, physicists at Britain’s University of Nottingham published a new analysis of this formula, concluding there are likely 36 alien civilizations in the Milky Way currently emitting signals we might be able to detect. It all jibes with the standard cosmological model, which…

Let's Go! On the Road

3 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU GO Postpandemic travel continues to change. Keep these points in mind before you hit the road. 1 RESERVATIONS ARE KEY Many popular attractions—amusement and theme parks, national parks, zoos, aquariums, and museums—require reservations to mantain safe attendance levels. 2 WHAT’S YOUR COMFORT LEVEL? Venturing outside your social-distancing bubble can be stressful. Determine what will make you feel safe—accommodations with contactless check-in, outdoor dining—and plan accordingly. 3 CHECK LOCAL GUIDELINES Last summer’s travel restrictions have loosened, but you’ll still need to pay attention to local regulations. For domestic travel guidelines, visit cdc.gov. WHAT TO DRIVE If you don’t want to drive your own vehicle, consider these options. RENTAL CAR COMPANIES A shortage of rental cars (agencies whittled down their fleetslast year) is expected to last through the year. Shop around and book early. WTF Is the Metaverse?

WTF Is the Metaverse?

The metaverse is in the air. Mark Zuckerberg won’t stop talking about turning Facebook into one. Zombie-strewn Fortnite says it’s on the way to becoming one. Microsoft is going to develop an enterprise one, which sounds fun. But what is it? If you’ve been nodding along and hoping that eventually people will stop talking about it, we have good news and bad news. Metaverse news is only going to increase. This is obviously the bad news. In better news, we have a quick primer to help you with the basics. So here are your questions (hopefully) answered. Hi. Hi. This is going to sound weird, but are you really here? Sure. Let’s say yes. I ask because I was just reading about Mark Zuckerberg and this metaverse thing, and it has thrown me into an existential…

Catch PLUTO this summer

IN 1929, Clyde William Tombaugh, a farm boy who grew up in Illinois and Kansas, began working at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The director of the facility, renowned astronomer Vesto Slipher, had hired Tombaugh based on some high-quality sketches of Jupiter and Mars he sent to the observatory. Tombaugh’s job was to search for Planet X, a world that some astronomers believed existed beyond Neptune. Using the observatory’s 13-inch astrograph, Tombaugh exposed hundreds of glass plates. His search strategy involved photographing the same region of sky several days apart and then using a machine called a blink comparator to see if any objects on the plates moved. It took him only until January 1930 to stumble onto Pluto. Since then, amateur astronomers have regarded observing the distant, ever-so-faint world as a…

Black in Academia

IN MAY, the killing of George Floyd brought a harsh reality to the forefront of conversations worldwide: Racism permeates every aspect of society. And science, as part of society and my own profession, is not immune. Social media movements in 2020 such as #BlackInTheIvory and #BlackBirdersWeek urged the scientific community to take a hard look at the racism that lies within its walls, as revealed by its own community members. Thousands of Black scientists took to Twitter, Facebook and beyond to share personal stories of prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination faced throughout their careers. These experiences have had devastating consequences for their mental health, professional success and, ultimately, willingness to stay in their fields. Racism in science is nothing new. For centuries, science has been a foremost tool used to build, defend…

HOW TO USE SNAP LAYOUTS IN WINDOWS 11

HOW TO USE SNAP LAYOUTS IN WINDOWS 11

Windows 11 may be better known for its centered taskbar and rounded window borders, but the new Snap Layouts feature (sometimes also called Snap Assist) might be a more useful UI innovation. Windows, as its name implies, has long been excellent at managing and rearranging program windows, but Snap Layouts elevate the operating system (OS) to the next level. HOW DO SNAP LAYOUTS WORK? To get started with this new productivity tool, you simply hover the mouse over the Maximize icon in a program window’s upper-right corner. You’ll see a choice of layouts, like this: Note that not every application supports this feature. In my testing, the Firefox and Spotify programs showed only the old Maximize option. But you can still position them within a Snap Layout after starting the process with an…

DAWN OF THE STEM CELL REVOLUTION?

FOR MORE THAN TWO decades, experts have prophesied that stem cells will someday revolutionize medicine. While adult stem cells have long been used to treat a handful of blood and immune disorders, the excitement has centered on two more versatile varieties: embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), both of which can be transformed into any cell type in the body. Google “the promise of stem cells,” and you’ll get at least 200,000 hits, involving ailments ranging from diabetes to neurodegenerative disorders. So far, however, no one has managed to translate that potential into a practical therapy. In 2020, a string of breakthroughs suggested that the revolution may finally be near. The most dramatic news came in May, when the New England Journal of Medicine published the first case…

USING OPPOSITE WEIGHTSHIFT

Standard weightshift is used to give a nicely coordinated turn, especially when thermalling. If you are thermalling right then you use right-side brake and apply right weightshift, which means putting more load on the right side of the harness seat on the side where you are braking. If you are thermalling left, you apply left brake and weightshift left. A nice combination of weightshift and brake will help you to make a more efficient turn and improve your climb rate, especially in a tight core. This technique is used by all pilots and is a fundamental part of good flying. Opposite weightshift Sometimes pilots use another completely different technique in certain situations, which I call ‘opposite weightshift’. I have not heard of pilots discussing this often, but once I pointed it out I realised…

STAY A WHILE

When overnight guests arrive at your home, what will they find when they make their way to their room? It could feel as spectacular as a bedroom in a luxurious villa or as unpleasant as a tired roadside motel. The difference depends on design choices, which is why so many designers are intent on pushing the decorative envelope in these spaces, even if many of us struggle to mentally move beyond the primary suite. “Because neither you nor your guests will be staying too long in that room, you can be more daring than you would be in the rest of the house,” says Nicolò Castellini Baldissera, an interior designer in Milan. “I like pattern, fabric, toile, stripes, and color, color, color. It should be more personal than a hotel…

HELLO 1973 My brother [David Sylvian, né Batt] and I played music together in any free time we had. I started out with guitar, but approaching it left-handed, I found the chord shapes really difficult on a right-handed guitar. So I gave up and decided to focus on the rhythm department. I was a big fan of Tyrannosaurus Rex at that time, and the guitar and percussion partnership of Bolan and [Mickey] Finn seemed like a good road to take for two brothers learning about music. Mick [Karn] was a school friend in my brother’s year, two years above mine. He was already fairly musical and decided he’d join us by learning to play the bass. When we did our first gig [on June 1, 1974 at Karn’s brother’s wedding] Mick and…

WHY I CAN’T WAIT TO TRAIN AGAIN

Over the past year, I’ve realised simultaneously how lucky I am: my lockdown life remained pretty much the same as my ‘normal’ life (working from home, taking the dog for a walk, watching TV, bed), and also, how incredibly boring I am. Man, if you’d told 16-year-old me that, by the age of 46, the most exciting moment of every day would be getting into bed at 9.30pm, turning the electric blanket on and watching Come Dine With Me, I would probably have divorced my Future Self. Imagine being a proper grown-up, with total freedom, and not spending every night at a gig, or a ball, or a ‘happening’! What a waste of a life! What’s the point of growing up if you’re going to go to bed early, like…

THE NEW iMAC 24”: A NEW ERA FOR DESKTOP COMPUTING BEGINS

It was perhaps one of Apple’s most anticipated product refreshes of all time, and at its Spring Loaded event, the Cupertino company did not disappoint. Apple’s iconic all-in-one desktop computer has been overhauled from the ground up, sparking a new era for the Mac. AN ALL-NEW DESIGN At last year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple confirmed plans to transition away from third-party computer chips towards its own custom-designed silicon. Fast-forward six months, and the first M1 Macs were born, with the Mac mini, MacBook, and MacBook Pro given new leases of life with record-breaking internals, taking the Mac into a new direction. The WORLD of COMETS

LITTLE MEANS MORE to me than comets. While in the sixth grade at Roslyn School in Montreal, I delivered the first of more than 2,500 lectures I’ve given in my life. The subject I chose for this first talk was comets, and it’s amazing to me to compare what we knew about comets then with what we know now. For example, all those years ago, we knew of a few hundred comets; now we know of at least 4,000. The most famous of all comets, Halley’s Comet, last rounded the Sun on Feb. 9, 1986. Twenty-one years before that, on Dec. 17, 1965, I began searching telescopically for comets. On Nov. 13, 1984, I discovered my first. I’ll never forget my view of a brand-new comet that no one else had…

AND BREATHE...

At times of crisis, we’re often told to ‘just breathe’. Yet how often do we actually think about the functionality of our breath? ‘Oxygen is the most essential natural resource required by our cells,’ says breathwork coach Rebecca Dennis. ‘We can go without food for up to 40 days and water for three days, yet we get into trouble after just moments of not breathing.’ In short, breath equals life – which is why, according to Dennis, ‘Learning how to use the full capacity of our natural breathing system is comparable to giving our body and mind an MOT.’ And it seems this type of reset is sorely needed. Dennis continues: ‘The majority of adults and teenagers I see have dysfunctional breathing patterns and are not using their respiratory system to…

Microsoft Windows 11: A Radically Modernized Design

Many people thought there would never be a Windows 11—understandably, after Microsoft announced in 2015 that Windows 10 would be the operating system’s last version number. New competition from Chrome OS likely made the case for a more significant interface update, though, and Windows 11 borrows heavily from Google’s lightweight desktop design. Despite its drastically new look, Windows 11 remains nearly functionally identical to Windows 10, with some new features and conveniences added. After six years of ho-hum upgrades, a major overhaul to the world’s most popular desktop operating system is welcome news: Windows fans finally have something to get excited about. PROS: Beautiful, more consistent new design. Great window layout options. New video game options. Better multi-monitor functionality. New performance-improving features. Planned support for Android apps. CONS: Requires a recent CPU.…

EDITOR’S LETTER

It seems astonishing to me that the first issue of Vogue I edited was published five years ago this month. Granted it was December 2017, the latter half of a different decade, before 60 months of living history at what felt like warp speed. Yet it really does seem like a lifetime ago, not least because of the level of change we’ve all witnessed in the world of fashion and beyond. I’m not especially given to looking back – what’s next will always grab my attention – but pausing for a moment, it is heartening to look through the pages of this issue here in my office at Vogue House and see a magazine that, I hope, feels effortless in its representation. Five years ago, Adwoa Aboah, the first cover star…

Improve Airfix’s SKYHAWK

Improve Airfix’s SKYHAWK

Bravo Scooter, the pilot’s nickname for the A-4B Skyhawk is an appelation that can be applied to Airfix’s kit of the little Douglas strike fighter. First released in 2012, it nails the shapes, but like any kit, a few improvements make it even better. Plus, I planned to drop the flaps to make my Skyhawk unique. Inspiration to finish the model came from an Xtradecal sheet (No. X72180) that offers five options for A-4Bs. I chose an aircraft from VA-12 “Flying Ubangis” aboard USS Essex in 1966. Using grout to model soil

One of the basics of scenery is the underlying soil base – dirt, in other words. Even though it’s needed in almost all scenes in one form or another, modeling it isn’t always easy. Soil materials available from scenery manufacturers aren’t available in a lot of colors, and the colors that are available may not be a match for the soil in the region you’re modeling. You could make your own ground cover by going to the prototype site, collecting shovels of real dirt, and sifting it, but that can be time consuming and expensive. Recently I was at the hardware store and saw a color chart of earth tones posted on a display rack next to bags of grout. I’d always thought grout only came in whites and grays. Not…

Call of the wild

Matt Sweeney & Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy ★★★★ Superwolves DOMINO. CD/DL/LP A SENSE OF drama seems to be one of the defining characteristics of Superwolf/Superwolves music, both in writing and performance. How and when the pre-conditions for that drama are fulfilled, and whether the phase of the moon has a place in them, only Matt Sweeney and Will Oldham (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy in his work-clothes, or on his workhorse) seem to know. But the union which coalesced so effectively between three songs played for the first time on a figurative high wire at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in 2003, and a Saturday night headlining set at the Green Man festival in August 2005, has reconvened 16 years later with its musical and lyrical potency miraculously intact. “When I come to your streets, make worry for me,”…

HOW TO DO PARTY NAILS It’s not Christmas without a classic red mani. Add a glossy top coat for glamour, or play it cool and go matte. For some festive sparkle without going overboard, try a pearlescent – I’m a big fan of OPI’s Snow Holding Back. Or try some tinsel-inspired glitter nail art: take a fine-liner brush and use gold or silver glitter polish to paint small swirls all over a nude base colour. Iram Shelton pro nail artist MAKE ANY OUTFIT FEEL INSTANTLY FESTIVE For me, Christmassy dressing is about being chic and not too literal, so it’s worth investing in a couple of longer-term pieces that speak to your style. These could be: a red jumper, a tartan top (a good staple), something brocade (sparkly but not too party), a pair of…

DATABASE REVEALS OVER 200K PEOPLE INVOLVED IN POSTING FAKE REVIEWS ON AMAZON I actually reported some sellers attempting to buy my good review directly to Amazon. Amazon was extremely slow in actually being able to take down the vendors. The process was so painful, in fact, that I probably would never bother to do it again. I’m sure those same vendors are back up on Amazon as some other name, as Amazon does zero vetting of marketplace vendors. Amazon has serious issues with credibility and many of the Chinese vendors on their platform are very underhanded and don’t follow the Amazon Marketplace rules at all. I stopped reading anything other than the bad reviews, really. I do check the questions from time to time … but I never read the good…

EMMA STONE CHECKLISTS THE THOMPSON ALLURE: “UNAPOLOGETICALLY HERSELF, AUTONOMOUS, FREE, UNBELIEVABLY INTELLIGENT AND DAMN FUNNY” Sometimes, Emma Thompson will enter a room and burst into tears. “This year and last year, the times I’ve really cried is when I’ve walked into a space my daughter used to be in and she isn’t there anymore.” The scene, featuring one of cinema’s top blubberers, is easy to picture – afternoon light, a little dust in the air, untouched bed, “and tears like a river,” says Thompson, who on top of seeing her grown-up daughter, Gaia, move out last summer, turned 60 a couple of years ago and has been feeling a bit “limbo-ish” ever since. “I have gone,” she says, that famous voice as smart and self-pillorying as ever, “a tad on the…

A fresh start

A fresh start

Due to some unexpected life changes a couple of years ago, I lost my house and train room and moved to an apartment in Copenhagen, Denmark. Because of the transition to a smaller living space, I thought my model railroading activities were over. Since I work from home, I initially planned to use the small spare room in my apartment as an office. As I further examined the space, the idea of using it as a hobby room emerged. It was possible to build an almost 9-foot-long module along one wall and have a workbench along the opposite wall. Fortunate planning Before I moved into the apartment, I worked out a plan for my next layout using modules. I already had laser-cut plywood frames made for the first three sections and wanted to…

White Light, White Heat

Once it was established that high-performance SUVs were not an oxymoron, there was only one direction to go: up. More speed, quicker acceleration, greater grip, more tenacious braking, and—most of all—higher prices. At Porsche, the progression of high-test versions with more horsepower and compound badge extensions has led to the 2022 Cayenne Turbo GT, a veritable sport-utility weapon capable of amazing things on the track, up to and including the vaunted Nürburgring. Other high-end carmakers have joined in—even Ferrari with its upcoming Purosangue. Aston Martin entered the fray a couple of years ago with its DBX. We’d surmise, however, that the beastly 2023 DBX 707 was in the model plan from the outset. These Cayenne and DBX models make an excellent pairing, and not just because our samples were painted focus-group white…

The following sections list the model names, specs, and pricing for the 104 loudspeaker manufacturers (including three subwoofer-only makers), and 34 cable companies (three of which also make speakers and/or subs) that we’ve chosen as being most worthy of your attention. We’ve also included the issue number of The Absolute Sound in which the product has been reviewed (if it has been reviewed), and whether the product has received an Editors’ Choice Award (EC), Golden Ear Award (GE), or, the ultimate prize, Product of the Year (POY) recognition. In many cases we’ve included the award indications for updated versions of products that have won those awards in the past, even if we haven’t fully reviewed the new version. We’ve done this only for those products that are substantially similar to the…

December issues hold a special place in my heart…

I began my editorship of British Vogue with one, way back in the mists of time in 2017, nine transformational fashion seasons ago – before a pandemic, before the global rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, just as the Me Too moment was crystallising in fashion, Hollywood and beyond, when the world looked so fundamentally different. The magazine has evolved a great deal in the few, if epic-seeming, years since, just as it should. But as British Vogue has raised its consciousness, to meet the moment and to become an active participant in the important conversations of our time, I also find comfort and power in the fact we will always be devoted to the fundamental wonder of fashion, in all its joy-giving, imagination-sparking, personality-shaping glory. To that end, whatever the…

MODELING FORBIDDEN SPACES

Danger: there’s a word that’s familiar to every railroader. Danger comes with the job and it’s woven into the fabric of every railroad career. Years ago, when laws, security threats, and safety regulations were simpler (and litigation less prevalent and costly), many railroad employees would let photographers wander into company facilities with little more than a wave or at most a friendly suggestion to be careful. Many railfans were able to get close to massive locomotives and equipment without worry and without causing corporate or law-enforcement concern. The most cautious places made visitors sign a release. However, as time has passed, many employees are now trained to politely (but firmly) ask prospective visitors to leave or even to call the authorities to remove them. Much of today’s railroading happens in places…

The next chapter

I am writing this on a quiet morning in the Norfolk countryside, sitting at my desk at home, overlooking the garden and the meadow beyond. There is a graceful line of poplar trees, their branches swaying in a gentle breeze, reaching up towards skies, and I well remember seeing the same view two years ago and deciding in an instant that I wanted to move here and change my way of life. As a Londoner born and bred, with a job as editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, I had spent years in the beating heart of the city, racing to meet deadlines and dashing to appointments, always running towards the next challenge. And yet the moment that I fell in love with this pastoral landscape, I knew I wanted to embrace…

COMING UP ROSES

PRINCEGEORGE’S BIRTHDAY Ensure many happy returns with practical shorts and playful dresses Prince George’s eighth-birthday party is sure to be a lively affair, so classic but comfortable attire is called for. Smart stripy shorts worn with loafers and a crisp white shirt are de rigueur for any little prince, while their sisters will enchant in pastel-coloured party frocks and Mary-Janes. Presents should aim to please the parents too – eschew garish electronics and opt for a set of stylish Liberty skittles or a Tiffany teddy bear. LYDIA SLATER THE DUCHESS OF SUSSEX’S BABYSHOWER Welcome the newborn in cosseting pinks Dressing up for arguably the most exclusive event of 2021 – Serena Williams co-hosted the last one – demands serious thought. Dior’s blush-pink gown is both exquisitely elegant and a graceful nod to the baby-to-be’s gender.…

Lauren HUTTON On GOING YOUR OWN WAY

I grew up in Charleston and Miami and Tampa. My idea of beauty was a giant orange and yellow grass-hopper with pastel wings that I saw when I was a little girl. I chased my cousin Artie around with it! When I moved to New York and became a model, I didn’t know anything about the industry. I got a job modeling for Christian Dior for $50 a week. Once I started working, I made myself an athlete. I uncrossed my eyes. (Dick Avedon used to look up at me from behind his camera and ask, “Are they straight yet?”) I jumped around. I worked hard. But by 1972, there weren’t many of us models left. All the big girls like Veruschka, Twiggy, and Jean Shrimpton had basically split. I wish…

The art of kindness

His tender tale of four ink-drawn wanderers sold more than 1m copies last year, never leaving the bestseller list and becoming the longest-running Sunday Times Number One non-fiction hardback of all time. But Charlie Mackesy isn’t all that bothered by the figures. ‘They couldn’t be less relevant,’ he says. ‘The only things that matter to me are the emails I get saying, “This book really helped me.”’ Let’s just say, he gets a lot of them. Since it was published in late 2019, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse has brought comfort and joy to a global community trying to make sense of a ‘new normal’ induced by the pandemic. The illustrated account of four unlikely friends navigating a wild, beautiful and bewildering world became an instant…

Roku Ultra (2020): Feature-Filled Media Hub

Roku’s 2020 model of the Ultra media streamer is an iterative update to the line. The previous Ultra was already a powerful, feature-filled media hub, so the fact that the new model simply adds Dolby Vision support and faster processing isn’t a letdown. The Ultra can stream 4K HDR content, supports loads of apps and services, and its remote includes a headphone jack for privately listening to whatever you’re watching. It remains a top pick among high-end media streaming devices, but at $99.99, it feels a bit pricey compared with some other new models. PROS: Fast performance. AirPlay and Dolby Vision support. Remote has a headphone jack for private listening. CONS: Expensive. Still doesn’t have a fully functional voice assistant. Missing Twitch. BOTTOM LINE: The 2020 model of the Roku Ultra media streamer…

DID COVID HEAL NATURE?

DID COVID HEAL NATURE?

THE WELSH VILLAGE of Llandudno went quiet in March as stay-at-home orders began. Then the goats descended from the mountain. A wild herd of Kashmiri goats has lived near Llandudno for almost two centuries, and they sometimes come down from the Great Orme Mountain during inclement weather. But this spring, while the human world hit pause, they settled into town for a few days, munching on hedges and trotting down the empty streets. The goats joined a host of animal celebrities flooding the internet after they supposedly reclaimed urban areas: dolphins frolicking in Venice’s clean canals, elephants drunk on corn wine in a tea garden in China’s Yunnan province. Tweets announcing these events proclaimed that nature was recovering from years of abuse by humans, thanks to COVID-19 shutdowns. While the goats really did…

A SCENT OF ADVENTURE

‘There is a really incredible natural scent to this place. Almost all of the doors are open most of the time – there is the salt of the sea, the freshness of the greenery,’ says Ben Gorham, founder of fragrance house Byredo, of his stunningly modern beach retreat on Gotland. ‘There’s also a faint whiff of sheep,’ he adds with a smile, referencing the animals that share their name with this remote dot of land in the Baltic Sea. The Swedish island may be best known for the medieval architecture of Visby, a picturesque town and UNESCO world heritage site, but it also has a wild side. It is the latter that attracted Ben to build a home here to share with his wife Natasha and their two daughters, Ines and…
