King Charles’ Coronation: A Lifetime in the Making

King Charles’ Coronation: A Lifetime in the Making

Through a steady London rain on the morning of May 6, the pomp and ceremony of King Charles III’s coronation began with a ride in the Diamond Jubilee State coach. The carriage, first used in 2014 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the accession of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, departed from Buckingham Palace at 10:20 a.m. Escorted by more than 150 members of the British armed forces and cheered on by thousands of damp but decidedly enthusiastic well-wishers, the enclosed horse-drawn coach rolled its way to Westminster Abbey. For Charles, 74, accompanied by his wife of 18 years, Queen Camilla, 75, the ride followed a carefully charted course, winding past landmarks like Trafalgar Square, the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben. At only 1.4 miles, the King’s procession…

iMac vs Studio Two powerful desktop options to upgrade your station

With Apple reportedly ditching its plans to launch a successor to the 27-inch iMac Pro, professional users now have the choice between the 24-inch M1 iMac and the new Mac Studio with Studio Display for the desktop set-up. Whilst the former is ideal for emails, data entry, and basic editing, the latter is a powerhouse and takes Mac computing to a new level. WITHDRAWING THE 27-INCH iMAC Since the announcement of the transition to Apple Silicon, Apple has been working hard to give its entire Mac family a new lease of life. Goodbye are the same old designs with virtually no changes, and hello to a new era of Mac computing. Although the first couple of devices to transition to M-series chips looked virtually identical to their predecessors, Apple has since begun…

The Internet’s Used-Auto Dealers Want to Buy Your Car

In December, David Tvaltchrelidze bought a 2016 Mazda Miata for $16,450 from Shift Technologies Inc., one of a crop of startups selling used cars and trucks exclusively online. Seven months later, Shift offered to buy it back for $20,800, which would net Tvaltchrelidze a sporty 26% return. “I wish I had bought 10 of them,” he says. Despite the markup, Shift would be able to resell the car quickly and still pocket about $2,000 in profit. And Tvaltchrelidze hasn’t yet agreed, given the price he’d have to pay for another used car. The used-car market has gone crazy over the past year, as social distancing and a global computer chip shortage have upended the auto industry, and companies such as Shift are thriving. The 3-year-old startup sold 10,323 vehicles in the first…

LG to Close Mobile Phone Business

LG to Close Mobile Phone Business

LG announced that it will close its mobile phone business, still the number-three player by sales in the US. The company will sell down its existing inventory of phones, including the LG Stylo 6, LG Wing, and LG Velvet, while continuing to provide support and software updates “for a period of time which will vary by region.” “LG’s strategic decision to exit the incredibly competitive mobile phone sector will enable the company to focus resources in growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence, and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services,” the company said in a press release. The company had reportedly sought a buyer for its money-losing phone business but hadn’t found any takers. Among other things, this means the “LG Rollable” phone, which…

Patreon Prepares For Its Close-Up

In today’s Silicon Valley, land of buzzwords, there may be none buzzier than “creator”—the tech industry’s chosen way to refer to someone who gathers an audience by posting their words, images, or videos online. Every tech company seems to be fixated on building tools to help their super users make money through subscriptions, tips, or other direct payments from fans, whether they’re running audio streaming services like Apple and Spotify or social networks like Facebook and Twitter. All these big companies are, in a sense, aping Patreon Inc., the tech startup that’s spent the past eight years building tools to allow content creators to accept recurring payments from their fans. Patreon is in the midst of a hiring spree, and in April it raised $155 million from investors who valued it…

IN GOOD COMPANY

When Orlando Atty began working as an assistant at Robert Kime 13 years ago, few, Orlando included, would have imagined that he would eventually be running what is one of the most influential businesses in the world of antiques, fabrics and interior decoration. He was appointed managing director in 2016 and, although so many of us were shocked at Robert’s sudden death in August 2022, there was, thankfully, a clear succession plan already in place. At the time of writing, the small team at Robert Kime is in the middle of implementing this plan far earlier than anticipated. Some of the photographs featured in these pages were taken nearly a year ago and include a portrait of Robert and Orlando at the company’s treasure-filled warehouse in Wiltshire. In 2010, Orlando had…

Europe’s Energy Crisis Is Coming for The Rest of Us

Europe’s Energy Crisis Is Coming for The Rest of Us

This winter, the world will be fighting over something that’s invisible, yet rarely so vital—and in alarmingly shorter supply. Nations are more reliant than ever on natural gas to heat homes and power industry as they work to quit coal and increase the use of cleaner energy sources. But there isn’t enough gas to fuel the post-pandemic recovery and refill depleted stocks before the cold months. Countries are trying to outbid one another for supplies as exporters such as Russia move to keep more natural gas home. The crunch will get a lot worse when temperatures drop. The crisis in Europe presages trouble for the rest of the planet as the continent’s energy shortage has governments warning of blackouts and factories being forced to shut. Inventories at European storage facilities are at historically…

Anne and Brian Trinque never intended to build from scratch. But a serendipitous meeting with architect Ron DiMauro of DiMauro Architects at an overgrown lot half a mile from the beach in Jamestown, Rhode Island, changed their tune. “Our real estate agent, who knew we had been in touch with him about renovating another property, saw him drive by and flagged him down,” Anne says. “We discussed our dream for a three-bedroom where we could escape in summer with the kids.” The couple had definite ideas for the look and feel of the house, inside and out. The team, overseen by project architect Tyler Zagryn, took cues from the modern farmhouses Anne loves and the shingled seaside homes that are the firm’s specialty. The result? A board- and batten cottage best…

Finding Their Light

Finding Their Light

ALEXANDRA GRAY BENNETT and her husband were ready to nest. Finally back together in their native Minnesota—after they married, he had moved to Boston for business school—the couple were looking for an ideal home to start a family in. “We were basically Trulia regulars,” jokes Bennett. “But I remember the first moment I saw our house in 2017. I just had a feeling.” Set in the leafy Kenwood neighborhood of South Minneapolis, the 2,300-square-foot, two-and-a-half-story 1920s cedar-shingle dwelling had a traditional foursquare design, with a room in each corner and a central hall and stairway. It ticked all their boxes: It was simple and beautiful, close to lakes and trails for their Labrador, and—the kicker—walking distance from one of the city’s best playgrounds. Two years and one positive pregnancy test later,…

Treasure Hunt

Designer Anne Chessin’s clients spent years exploring various summer destinations to find the perfect one for their six-person and two-feline family. The kids deemed a hamlet in Upstate New York too isolating, while the parents, who work in high-stress careers, found a popular Long Island beach enclave to be frenetic. Then, they rented a cottage in an off-the-beaten-path part of southeastern Rhode Island. With its casual, coastal vibe and family-friendly atmosphere—the wife notes that there are not many places where an 8-year-old can hop on a bike and ride to the beach—the couple (and the kids!) declared it perfection. The couple called on Chessin to help build a summer house that would blend in with neighborhood cottages, many of which were handed down through generations. Something “throwbacky and simple,” as they…

The price of protest

D’Angelo Sandidge was lying in bed and scrolling through Instagram on June 1, thinking about the ground sausage he was about to fry for breakfast, when he stumbled upon a video that he’d heard about but not yet seen. His anger intensified as he watched the footage of George Floyd begging for his life while a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck. By the time the video ended, after he’d watched Floyd, who was Black, call out for his mother and eventually fall silent, Sandidge had lost his appetite. “I felt sick to my stomach,” he says. Until that moment, Sandidge, who is also Black, had not been one to hit the streets in protest. But this was different. At 6 ft. 4 in. and 280 lb., he is…

PHOTOGRAPHING URBAN LANDSCAPES

PHOTOGRAPHING URBAN LANDSCAPES

The dictionary defines the word “landscape” as “all the visible features of an area of countryside or land, often in terms of their aesthetic appeal.” When you hear the word “landscape,” your mind likely summons a vast and sprawling natural expanse, perhaps with trees and rolling hills. It’s OK; the same thing happens with me when I think of that word. I believe that it has become a bit of a knee-jerk instinct for photographers to associate landscapes with nature. It’s why when you search for landscape photos, you’ll likely be treated with a bevy of beautiful natural locations. However, it’s worth pointing out that the genre of landscape photography is quite broad. As someone who grew up in New York City and who didn’t leave it until I was 18 years…

The year is 1988. In the mountain village of Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico, Wence Martinez, a young Zapotec weaver, stands at his hand-built loom, transforming the elemental spirit of a small ink painting into a woven artwork. His concentration is total as he guides threads of undyed black and white churro wool—sheared from local sheep and spun by elders from a nearby village—with his shuttle. His feet walk the treadles with a quiet, meditative rhythm, as he weaves through the challenges presented by the painting’s curves and shapes. “From the first time I saw Sandra’s painting, I knew there was a connection between us. I told myself, I’m going to weave that.”—Wence Martinez Two visitors from Door County, Wisconsin, who know the village and Wence’s work, gave him the painting:…

Whisper-light and awash in happy, sun-drenched colors, each one is hand-woven on wooden looms by African artisans, following centuries-old traditions. The brand’s founder is Ethiopian model and maternal-health advocate Liya Kebede, who rose to fame in the early aughts as the face of Tom Ford’s Gucci and the first Black spokesmodel for Estée Lauder. On a trip to her hometown of Addis Ababa around that time, she noticed a distressing drop in the demand for traditional garments, and got busy. “Weaving is a craft that has been passed through generations and holds deep cultural significance,” says Kebede, who set her mind to preserving the art,…

Do All Galaxies Have Dark Matter?

Do All Galaxies Have Dark Matter?

SOME 60 MILLION light-years from Earth — by the estimate of one team of researchers, anyway — a pair of strange galaxies is causing a cosmic stir. The bizarre galaxies, named NGC 1052-DF2 and NGC 1052-DF4 (or DF2 and DF4, for short), are the first known galaxies born without any significant amount of dark matter. If confirmed, their existence would throw a wrench into our understanding of how galaxies form and evolve. But, as Carl Sagan liked to say, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. And, according to some researchers, the evidence for these dark-matter-deficient galaxies doesn’t hold up. THE CLAIM: NOTHING TO SEE HERE Astrophysicist Pieter van Dokkum of Yale University was certainly surprised when he first spotted DF2. After data from the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the Hubble…

Hands On With the OnePlus Watch: Lots of Promise for Just $159

I’ll admit, I was pretty skeptical before unboxing the first smartwatch from OnePlus, aptly named the OnePlus Watch. At $159, it’s less than half the price of our Editors’ Choice winner, the Apple Watch Series 6 (which starts at $399). And while it doesn’t work with iPhones, it offers many of the same features as Apple’s market-leading wearable. So far, my skepticism appears to have been unfounded. The OnePlus Watch offers a large color touch screen, built-in GPS, 2GB of storage, a 402mAh battery that promises two weeks of power, and the ability to make and receive calls. It also has plenty of health and fitness features, including support for more than 110 workout types, automatic workout detection for jogging and running, rapid-heart-rate alerts, guided breathing exercises, stress detection, and the…

HP Chromebook x2 (2021): A Clever Combination

So you’re in the market for a detachable 2-in-1—a tablet you can use either by itself or with a keyboard and stylus? The Apple 10.9-inch iPad Air is a good choice—in fact, a PCMag Editors’ Choice winner—at $599. But if you’re willing to think different, HP’s 11-inch Chromebook x2 costs the same—including twice the memory as well as the keyboard and pen that Apple will charge you an extra $428 for. Tablet shoppers rarely consider Chromebooks, but the HP x2 favors the bold. It doesn’t perform as well as comparably priced Chromebook laptops (and we still consider our Editors’ Choice favorite, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, a better value among Chromebook detachables), but it fills a nifty niche. PROS: Affordable price includes pen and keyboard cover. Available 4G mobile broadband. CONS: Tepid performance.…

ENTERING LESLIE BENNETT’S backyard in Oakland, California, is like walking through a door to another world. Blue sky-flower and passion-fruit vines climb overhead. Bamboo, ‘Icee Blue’ podocarpus, and red-leaf banana blur the property lines. And beds packed with edibles, including guava, apple, pomegranate, and fig trees, offer a pluckable feast in any season. To say it’s an oasis in this sprawling city neighborhood is not an overstatement. The celebrated landscape designer and contractor intentionally planned her home garden so that every square inch of it delights the senses, and many of the plants honor her family’s Jamaican and British heritage. For Bennett, the founder and owner of Pine House Edible Gardens, a Bay Area firm that specializes in planting produce in ornamental landscapes, having an outdoor retreat where she can unwind,…

DID COVID HEAL NATURE?

DID COVID HEAL NATURE?

THE WELSH VILLAGE of Llandudno went quiet in March as stay-at-home orders began. Then the goats descended from the mountain. A wild herd of Kashmiri goats has lived near Llandudno for almost two centuries, and they sometimes come down from the Great Orme Mountain during inclement weather. But this spring, while the human world hit pause, they settled into town for a few days, munching on hedges and trotting down the empty streets. The goats joined a host of animal celebrities flooding the internet after they supposedly reclaimed urban areas: dolphins frolicking in Venice’s clean canals, elephants drunk on corn wine in a tea garden in China’s Yunnan province. Tweets announcing these events proclaimed that nature was recovering from years of abuse by humans, thanks to COVID-19 shutdowns. While the goats really did…

RIP iPod, the MP3 Player That Changed the Way We Listen to Music

The first time I heard an MP3 file was back in 1995. It was some protodrum-and-bass track that I had downloaded to my PC from an FTP site, back when the web was just beginning to go mainstream. I don’t remember the name of the song or the artist. But I do remember I was stunned at how clear it sounded. It was a full four-minute digital audio track that, at just a couple of megabytes, was also small enough to download in a few minutes over a dial-up connection. Today, with the exception of a growing band of vinyl enthusiasts, everyone listens to digital music. The single biggest reason for that is the iconic Apple iPod. Almost overnight, the iPod was everywhere in the aughts, with giant billboard ads, TV…

15 Years Ago, the iPhone Created ‘Big Tech’

Fifteen years ago, on January 9, 2007, I sat on the floor of a Las Vegas Convention Center entryway and pondered the iPhone. While I was running around the Consumer Electronics Show looking at the latest LG Chocolate, Steve Jobs was over at Macworld changing the world. I’d been covering smartphones for three years by then, and they were complex gadgets for road warriors. With the iPhone, Apple simplified the smartphone and made it a must-have for everyone. This wasn’t solely about Steve Jobs’ brilliance. He struck when several other technologies were becoming available—3G for the mobile web and capacitive touch screens for finger-friendly interfaces. And he worked without the legacy-software hangovers that Microsoft, Nokia, and Palm all struggled through from the first generation of proto-smartphones. The iPhone has made a huge number…

Andrew Rannells on the Art of Unclehood

Don’t call him a “guncle.” For actor Andrew Rannells, the popular portmanteau for “gay” and “uncle” is unwelcome—and infantilizing. “I’m not a tangential character in my nieces’ and nephews’ lives, I’m their uncle,” he ways with a laugh. “And it’s a little cutesy. I’m a 44-year-old man.” Rannells—known for his roles on TV (Girls, Black Monday) and Broadway (The Book of Mormon)—writes about his significant breadth of experience with the 10 children of his four siblings in his new book of humorous essays Uncle of the Year: And Other Debatable Triumphs. “I had this romanticized idea that when my brothers and sisters had kids that I would be the greatest uncle in the world,” he says. “And it didn’t really work out that way.” (He notes he now knows one cannot…

EARTH IS A PLANET PLANET TOO!

IN 2017, NASA CELEBRATED 20 consecutive years of Mars exploration — the longest humankind has continuously monitored another planet. But there’s a key phrase in that statement that’s easy to overlook: another planet. Even as planetary scientists strive to understand the fellow planets circling our Sun, it’s worth remembering that we have the perfect scientific testbed right at our fingertips. As the most familiar planet — and perhaps the strangest — Earth gives us insight into the forces that shaped our solar system, revealing clues about how rocky planets form and evolve. Studying Earth lets us walk before we run, testing techniques and technologies in a familiar setting before sending them to other worlds. But the more we learn, the more we see that our planet is one of the weirdest places…

It was 1973, and the Justice Department had just filed a civil rights lawsuit against Trump and his father Fred Trump. The complaint alleged that the Trumps and their company, which managed some 14,000 apartments in Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, had violated the Fair Housing Act by systematically flagging the applications of Black renters and steering them away from available units. To push back, the Trumps hired the famously combative Roy Cohn—Senator Joseph McCarthy’s chief counsel during the 1950s Red Scare hearings—and sued the Justice Department for $100 million, claiming defamation. The case naming the Trumps was settled two years later. That early entanglement with the Justice Department drove home to Trump…

NAILING THE BASICS OF ACTIVE FLYING

Whenever you fly, wherever you travel, you need to know about active flying – and apply what you know. So let’s cover it here. In smooth air, glider and pilot glide in unison. When you fly through turbulent air though, your wing can become disturbed, causing you to swing in an unbalanced way, which can expose you to greater risk of collapse and rapid height loss. You need to calm the movement so you fly in harmony again. This is active flying. Most wings are designed to recover by themselves, so why do you need to do anything? Paragliders are incredible aircraft, but a little corrective input can greatly improve their recovery time. Developing your active flying skills also allows you to reduce the movements and hugely improve your gliding performance. Watch out!…

Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 6 (AMD): Maximum Performance

Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 6 (AMD): Maximum Performance

Lenovo’s flagship 16-inch gaming laptop comes in both Intel and AMD flavors. The Intel version tested in October 2021—the Legion 7i Gen 6—is a real barn-burner, producing some of the best gaming benchmarks we’ve seen from any notebook. The AMD-powered Legion 7 Gen 6 (minus the i) reviewed here isn’t quite as fast and misses out on Nvidia G-Sync and Thunderbolt 4 without colossal cost savings—it starts at the same $1,439, though at $2,649 our test configuration is some $600 under the 7i we tested. But it’s still an exceptional performer, and more than doubles the Intel laptop’s battery life to ultimately be the more practical of the two. The Legion 7 Gen 6 claims our Editors’ Choice award among deluxe 16-inch gaming laptops. PROS: Top-notch gaming performance. Vivid 165Hz display.…

BLUE SKY THINKING

At Reid’s Palace – coral and cream pillars, chequerboard-tile floor, tinkling piano – you could be in the Twenties. Winston Churchill, George Bernard Shaw or any other of the hotel’s celebrated guests might stroll in at any minute, take a seat at their usual table and probably order their usual cocktail, too. The Avista is, by contrast, distinctly 2020s: a plate-glass and steel restaurant overlooking a garden in which cane sofas with funky cushions are hidden away under russet canvas awnings. I am tempted to say that this is like a microcosm of Madeira past and Madeira present. But the truth about this far southerly outpost of Portuguese culture in the middle of the Atlantic is not so simple. Madeira has changed quite a bit in the two decades since I was…

PRINCEGEORGE’S BIRTHDAY Ensure many happy returns with practical shorts and playful dresses Prince George’s eighth-birthday party is sure to be a lively affair, so classic but comfortable attire is called for. Smart stripy shorts worn with loafers and a crisp white shirt are de rigueur for any little prince, while their sisters will enchant in pastel-coloured party frocks and Mary-Janes. Presents should aim to please the parents too – eschew garish electronics and opt for a set of stylish Liberty skittles or a Tiffany teddy bear. LYDIA SLATER THE DUCHESS OF SUSSEX’S BABYSHOWER Welcome the newborn in cosseting pinks Dressing up for arguably the most exclusive event of 2021 – Serena Williams co-hosted the last one – demands serious thought. RICK PERRY CAME TO WASHINGTON LOOKING FOR A DEAL, AND less than two months into his tenure as Energy Secretary, he found a hot prospect. It was April 19, 2017, and Perry, the former Texas governor, failed presidential candidate and contestant on Dancing With the Stars, was sitting in his office on Independence Avenue with two influential Ukrainians. “He said, ‘Look, I’m a new guy, I’m a dealmaker, I’m a Texan,’” recalls one of them, Yuriy Vitrenko, then Ukraine’s chief energy negotiator. “We’re ready to do deals,” he remembers Perry saying. The deals they discussed that day became central to Ukraine’s complex relationship with the Trump Administration, a relationship that culminated in December with the House vote to impeach President Donald Trump. Perry was a leading figure in the impeachment inquiry…

What Is C-Band, and What Does It Mean for the Future of 5G?

What Is C-Band, and What Does It Mean for the Future of 5G?

A half-dozen companies are potentially ready to spend $80 billion for C-Band, a new set of airwaves that promise to fix the perilous state of American 5G, at an FCC auction. That’s a vast amount of money, and it shows how important C-Band is. But what is C-Band, and what does it mean for 5G? Do you need a C-Band phone? Is C-Band a new frequency? Should you be scared of C-Band? I can explain. RECOVERING THE SATELLITES According to wireless testing firm Rohde and Schwarz, the C-band is all frequencies between 4GHz and 8GHz. When US wireless geeks talk about C-Band, though, they’re talking about 3.7GHz to 4.2GHz—and specifically, in this case, the range from 3.7GHz to 3.98GHz. This frequency had been used for satellite TV since the 1970s, but as C-Band…

When will we get a vaccine?

THE CLEVEREST OF ENEMIES THRIVE ON SURPRISE attacks. Viruses—and coronaviruses in particular—know this well. Remaining hidden in animal hosts for decades, they mutate steadily, sometimes serendipitously morphing into more effective and efficient infectious agents. When a strain with just the right combination of genetic codes that spell trouble for people makes the leap from animal to human, the ambush begins. Such was the case with SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus behind COVID-19, and the attack was mostly silent and insidious at first. Many people infected with SARS-CoV-2 remained oblivious as they served as the virus’s new home and allowed it to establish a foothold in the global human population. These hosts were the perfect base camp for launching the attack that has upended social norms, economies, political systems and more all across the…

Grande journey

Grande journey

Twenty years ago, after moving into our home in Colorado, I began an excursion into building a large N scale layout featuring the Denver & Rio Grande Western line west of Denver. Benchwork began in January 1999, and mainline track soon followed with the gold spike driven in November 1999. Once the rest of the track and wiring were completed, I looked forward to getting my hands dirty with some scenery. The scenery base is carved foam insulation board, with Hydrocal rock castings and Sculptamold for initial textures. After a coat of earth-color latex paint, often tinted with acrylic paints, fine rock and ground foam were added, affixed with matte medium. One feature of the railroad that I really wanted to present was the 2 percent climb from Denver to Moffat Tunnel. I…

ENTER THE RED ZONE

ENTER THE RED ZONE

Orangetheory’s cosmic success hasn’t burned out since 2010. That’s because its research-minded approach to fitness actually works. It’s all about heart rate-based interval training. When you spend 12 or more minutes of an hour-long class in orange or red zones (see chart, right), muscles’ need for oxygen skyrockets. Your body answers by oxidizing carbs and fats, torching calories up to a day later in what’s called the afterburn. While OT gamifies the in-class experience by having clients wear heart-rate monitors and displaying real-time results on flatscreens, you can get the same body-sculpting results at home or your local gym. Here’s how. POWER Row: 5x150m Set the display to “Just Row” or 150-m intervals. These are all-out efforts. Strive for powerful strokes, keeping the rate around 24s/m or less. A 3- to 5-min. base-effort…

Plato (427-347 BC)

Among the many eulogies of Plato (real name Aristocles, 427-347 BC), it has become a common trend to reference A.N. Whitehead’s famous quote that a “general characterisation of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” However, one need only to look to Whitehead’s student and collaborator Bertrand Russell to sour that grandeur. Russell treated the Athenian “with as little reverence as if he were a contemporary English or American advocate of totalitarianism” (A History of Western Philosophy, 1945). This discrepancy of interpretations presents a problem to the modern reader. Plato’s presence will forever loom large in every philosophy department, but who was this man who inspires equal admiration and controversy, and what can we practically take from his life into our lives? For…

The Helping Hormone

The Helping Hormone

EVEN IF IT’S BEEN a while since health class, you likely know how estrogen impacts reproductive health. Its levels rise as we reach puberty; then each month it surges, causing the uterine lining to prep for a potential fertilized egg, and drops, kick-starting menstruation. As the years go on, levels ricochet up and down in perimenopause and drop at menopause. And along the way, estrogen gets blamed for breakouts and breakups, mood dips and weight gains. But what else does the hormone do? The better question may be “What doesn’t it do?” “Estrogen touches basically every cell,” says Jen Gunter, MD, a gynecologist and author of The Menopause Manifesto (Citadel, 2021). “Until recently, we didn’t recognize its importance beyond reproduction,” adds Elizabeth Poynor, MD, a gynecologic surgeon and founder of the…

This sun-kissed stone refuge sits above a turquoise cove near the Greek village of Kardamyli. It’s located in the Mani: one of the three “fingers” of the Peloponnese, the hand-shaped peninsula that hangs off the mainland. ONE LAST ADVENTURE

After 15 seasons, the TV show and popculture touchstone Supernatural is coming to an end. And sad as it may be that we can’t ride along anymore with Sam and Dean Winchester on their monster-hunting adventures, the ’67 Impala four-door they inherited from their dad has finally appeared as a 1/25 scale kit from AMT. As you would expect, the Impala in the TV show is not one car, but several vehicles used for various shots. In the show, the Impala is the trusty steed to the knights errant, as much a character as the Winchesters, presented as a stock survivor, lovingly cared for and preserved over the years. But the hero Impala, the main automobile, is a modern beast powered by a modern 550-horsepower 502 cid power plant, an upgraded,…

Canon Pixma G620 Wireless MegaTank Photo Printer: Excellent Quality

Canon Pixma G620 Wireless MegaTank Photo Printer: Excellent Quality

Canon Pixma G620 $299.99 EXCELLENT It’s easy to find a bulk-ink printer with the familiar cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK) quartet, but finding an ink-tank-rather than cartridge-based inkjet with six inks for superior photo quality has been difficult, prohibitively expensive, or both. Canon aims to change that with the Pixma G620 Wireless MegaTank Photo All-in-One Printer, which gets its tank refills from bottles. At $299.99, it’s half the price of the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 Wireless Color All-in-One Supertank. Versus that Epson, the Canon is slow and short on features, so it doesn’t join it (or the wide-format EcoTank Photo ET-8550) as an Editors’ Choice award winner. But the Pixma prints terrific-looking borderless photos at sizes up to 8.5 by 11 inches for pennies, making it a great value for families and…

Wall Street’s Newest Bet On Houses

Zillow Group Inc. is best known for the addictive real estate listings that keep people browsing the internet all night, checking out interior shots of homes for sale or the estimated prices of their own houses or the ones down the street. But Chief Executive Officer Rich Barton has staked his company’s future on the idea that its software can also ease a critical pain point for U.S. homeowners: the time it takes to sell. In recent years, Zillow has essentially dived into the house-flipping business, offering to quickly take properties off sellers’ hands. And in the process it’s helping pull Wall Street even deeper into the $2 trillion U.S. housing market. In August, Zillow raised $450 million from a bond backed by homes it’s bought but not yet sold. In the mid-1980s, when he was performing sold-out shows to standing ovations in Las Vegas, Andy Gibb would often return to his dressing room feeling he had failed. “He had everything going for him,” recalls his agent Jeff Witjas. “But I always felt that when he looked in the mirror, he saw nothing.” Thirty-four years after Gibb’s death from myocarditis at age 30, a new biography, Arrow Through the Heart, sheds light on the singer’s extraordinary rise to superstardom at 19 as well as on his persistent insecurities, struggles with fame and descent into cocaine addiction. No matter how many No. 1 singles he had (including “I Just Want to Be Your Everything” and “Shadow Dancing”) or how often older brother Barry told him he had “a better voice than…

We’re considering a butcher-block countertop for our kitchen island. What are the pros and cons, compared with other materials? —Cindy Miller, Carmine, Tex. Wood wins points for warmth and versatility: It can take on a range of looks, depending on the species and grain, and whether you stain it for a deeper tone or sheen, says Home Depot senior merchant Meredith Barclay. Butcher block is also kiln-dried and pre-sanded, so it will last years without warping. However, wood is porous, so you’ll need to seal your counter with a protective product containing mineral oil, such as Howard Butcher-Block Conditioner ($10 for 12 oz., homedepot.com). This blend of food-grade oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax prevents water absorption and bacteria buildup. Reapply it every month or so, or whenever the wood appears dry, suggests…

Cathy Poshusta has a thing for old houses. During the first decade of their marriage, she and her husband, Garrett, bought, lived in, and renovated five homes in Seattle, lovingly transforming them with their own hands. But in the summer of 2016, when she walked up the crumbling path of a worn-down farmhouse in the countryside outside Ellensburg, WA—a ranch town where she and Garrett both grew up—she experienced property lust on a different level. “I thought, I don’t just want to live in this house; I want to die in this house,” she says. “I fall in love with houses all the time, but with this one I had this great feeling I had never had before.” Looking at the place today, it’s not hard to see the appeal. Really?’ And then you start your story. And you’d say it again and again.” The Oscar, Emmy and Tony winner, 56, grew up in deep poverty with her parents and five siblings while enduring trauma and heartbreak: living in a dilapidated, condemned building infested with rats; dumpster-diving among maggots for food; reeking of urine at school because she had wet the bed and the family had no clean laundry; incessant bullying by boys who threw rocks at her for being Black. And then there was the physical and emotional abuse her alcoholic father…

Does New Cash Make Stocks Go Up?

For years, Jean-Philippe Bouchaud, a physicist-turned-money manager in Paris, has been trying to convince his old-school peers of a wild idea: When lots of people buy a stock, the price goes up. Wait—that’s obvious, right? Not really. For decades, financial theory has been built on the premise that a share price reflects everything known at any moment about a company’s value. When a company announces an earnings number, some traders see it as a bullish sign, others are bearish, and they trade with each other to settle on a price. In this model, it doesn’t really matter if a million or a billion dollars flows into a stock. After all, for every buyer there must be a seller. If a flood of buyers were to push the price too high, more…

RUNNING With SCISSORS

Miuccia Prada is not strictly a self-made woman. The company she revolutionized from a dusty luggage business to a paragon of luxury fashion was started by her grandfather. But she is certainly a self-fashioned one. She dyes her own hair honey blond. She cuts it herself too (though she might let hairstylist Guido Palau give her a snip backstage before a show). She is a woman who takes things into her own hands, whether that means ideas, projects, or skirt lengths. Posing for Tyler Mitchell for this photo shoot, she took out a pair of scissors and lopped off her hemline, right then and there. “There is a pleasure in cutting,” she tells me. The pleasure of cutting is what has propelled Miu Miu, Mrs. Prada’s other fashion line, to be…

Jeff Goldblum on How He Sees Technology

What would you see if you could look at the world through the eyes of Jeff Goldblum? Science and metaphysics don’t quite have the answers yet, but a Disney+ show does its best to answer the question. The World According to Jeff Goldblum, in its second season, follows various topics through Goldblum’s meandering musings. “Geez, I love science,” Goldblum says in the first episode of the series. And while there’s mystery in each episode, there’s science and technology, too. Sometimes they’re one and the same, as in an episode that captures the surrealness of street magic while also showing the neuroscience behind Goldblum’s own eyes deceiving him as he watches Penn and Teller do their thing. Both the trick and the tech that unveils it are treated with the same wonder…

But the 53-year-old has since had to contend with a much greater upset: the U.K.’s vote to leave the European Union. Now he reveals that he spends half his time preparing the financial system and economy for Brexit, which takes effect in March. Born in Canada’s remote Northwest Territories and educated at a public school in Edmonton, Carney graduated from Harvard and Oxford before working at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and the Canadian finance ministry. In early 2008 he became the eighth governor in the Bank of Canada’s history, winning praise for his quick reaction as the financial crisis developed. He succeeded Mario Draghi as chairman of…

CHEF ASHLEY CHRISTENSEN and food writer Kaitlyn Goalen warmed up to their freezer big-time after collaborating on a cookbook for Poole’s, Christensen’s beloved Raleigh, North Carolina, diner. The couple ended up with a gold mine of extra goodies from recipe testing—think béchamel, compound butters, and meat and vegetable stocks. “We froze a lot of those leftovers and spent the next year using them up, which turned into a fun way to make our home cooking much more delicious,” says Goalen. In It’s Always Freezer Season (Ten Speed Press) they share their expertise, and the contents of their shelves. “It’s not all waffles and pints of ice cream,” says Christensen (though they do offer a mean sage-and-sausage-waffle recipe). Treatments That Keep You You

Treatments That Keep You You

Many of us aren’t interested in overhauling our appearance with beauty treatments and definitely don’t want to be told that we should be. In fact, these days, the general desire is refreshingly the opposite. “People have leaned into their idiosyncrasies, no longer afraid of the things that make us different and finding great value in them,” says Lara Devgan, M.D., a plastic surgeon in New York. “It’s self-acceptance that comes from a place of self-love, not inadequacy,” says Caroline Robinson, M.D., a dermatologist in Chicago. So it’s no surprise that with aesthetic procedures, people are renouncing cookie-cutter results—the same pillowy lips, narrow nose, sculpted cheeks, and Facetuned complexion—and instead requesting “tweakments”: pro treatments that produce natural, almost-imperceptible changes. As such, injectors are moving away from what’s referred to as the…

Plant-based eating is experiencing a growth spurt. Almost one-third of Americans say they are actively trying to reduce their consumption of meat and dairy, according to the Plant Based Foods Association. Last year, 28 percent of people reported eating more protein from plant sources, 24 percent had more plant-based dairy, and 17 percent ate more plant-based meat alternatives than they did in 2019, a survey by the International Food Information Council found. Our desire for a more wellness-oriented lifestyle is fueling the trend. Health is the key reason 56 percent of people choose plant-based proteins, according to a 2020 report from the market research company Mintel, while environmental impact and animal welfare are the top concern for 26 percent, according to Mattson Consulting. “There’s been a lot of emerging science, as well…

Spice of Life

ON A TRIP to the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in February 2017, Sana Javeri Kadri, right out of college and working in marketing at Bi-Rite, San Francisco’s beloved specialty-grocery chain, was introduced to a turmeric so flavorful and nuanced, it changed the direction of her life. That might sound dramatic, but given the dusty old spices she was familiar with, this golden, glowing powder, packed with zesty, floral notes, was nothing short of a revelation. The man behind the bounty was a third-generation farmer, Prabhu Kasaraneni, who had planted heirloom turmeric using ancient, self-taught farming methods among fields of marigolds, bananas, and black rice. Within days, Javeri Kadri decided to put an income-tax return toward purchasing roughly seven hundred pounds of turmeric from him, promising to return to India…

Lauren HUTTON On GOING YOUR OWN WAY

I grew up in Charleston and Miami and Tampa. My idea of beauty was a giant orange and yellow grass-hopper with pastel wings that I saw when I was a little girl. I chased my cousin Artie around with it! When I moved to New York and became a model, I didn’t know anything about the industry. I got a job modeling for Christian Dior for $50 a week. Once I started working, I made myself an athlete. I uncrossed my eyes. (Dick Avedon used to look up at me from behind his camera and ask, “Are they straight yet?”) I jumped around. I worked hard. But by 1972, there weren’t many of us models left. All the big girls like Veruschka, Twiggy, and Jean Shrimpton had basically split. I wish…

All That Glitters

EVERY YEAR, Kevin Sharkey devotes pretty much an entire December weekend to decorating the 14-foot tree that grazes the ceiling of his sleek New York City apartment overlooking the Hudson River. “You’d think it would take longer because the tree is so tall, but it actually goes by pretty quickly,” he says. Moreover, he enjoys every minute of it, and his efforts are fueled by the excitement of good times—and good friends—to come. There’s a thoughtful method to his yuletide madness, too. He stores his ornaments in bins organized by type, then arranges similar ones in groups before hanging them. “It’s a great exercise of all my styling muscles and instincts,” he says. “I want it to look like it’s encrusted in baubles.” And to that end, he goes for…

Beats Fit Pro: Solid ANC

Beats Fit Pro: Solid ANC

After releasing the relatively affordable Studio Buds ($149.99) earlier this year, Beats is back with a new pair of noise-cancelling true wireless earphones, the Beats Fit Pro. Aptly named, the focus here is on in-ear fit security, with built-in earfins made of a pliable material that truly helps create a more secure seal in your ear. They’re also armed with active noise cancellation (ANC), and since Beats is owned by Apple, you get the company’s H1 chip, which enables features including Spatial Audio with head tracking, Adaptive EQ, hands-free Siri, and one-touch iOS pairing. The sonic performance is classic Beats, with intense bass, boosted highs, and a scooped-out midrange. The ANC is better than average, with effective low-frequency noise elimination. For the price, there’s plenty to like, but the Beats…

A SCENT OF ADVENTURE

‘There is a really incredible natural scent to this place. Almost all of the doors are open most of the time – there is the salt of the sea, the freshness of the greenery,’ says Ben Gorham, founder of fragrance house Byredo, of his stunningly modern beach retreat on Gotland. ‘There’s also a faint whiff of sheep,’ he adds with a smile, referencing the animals that share their name with this remote dot of land in the Baltic Sea. The Swedish island may be best known for the medieval architecture of Visby, a picturesque town and UNESCO world heritage site, but it also has a wild side. It is the latter that attracted Ben to build a home here to share with his wife Natasha and their two daughters, Ines and…

LOS ANGELES IS SYNONYMOUS WITH BEAUTY: the city is to beauty what Silicon Valley is to tech. Once considered merely the playground of the skin-deep-beautiful, with more cosmetic surgeons, dermatologists and aestheticians per capita than anywhere else in North America, it has now evolved a more inclusive landscape that innovates the latest in beauty, workouts and wellness. With so many start-ups sprouting up – a mix of slow burners and instant success stories – just like South Korea in the noughties, Los Angeles has become the destination to watch when it comes to the beauty zeitgeist. The LA star hasn’t always been in the ascendant. New York, for the longest time, was the epicentre of the biggest beauty movers and shakers, from brands and influencers to writers. But from about 2013,…

A different approach to modeling the Santa Fe

When my wife, Jenny, and I decided in the fall of 2017 to sell our house of 47 years and move into a retirement community, that meant the Argentine Industrial District Ry. would be dismantled. At age 80, I had no plans to build another railroad. I decided to give away or sell everything. Some 700 freight cars, 25 locomotives, and numerous structures and all support materials were disposed of in about two months. We moved to the retirement community in January 2018. By then, I’d accepted the reality that I’d built my last railroad. But then something surprising occurred when in July, Jenny asked me whether I thought we could find a house in Prairie Village, as she missed living in our own home. We began looking, and to our…

STROLLING THROUGH ROWS OF DUSKY-BLUE ‘Jarrahdale’ pumpkins, ombré towers of mahogany-orange ‘Daybreaks’, and clusters of blotchy ‘Lunch Lady’ gourds on a crisp fall day at Gordon Skagit Farms, it’s easy to imagine one of the plump wares turning into Cinderella’s stagecoach and rolling off through the fields. Located in Mount Vernon, Washington, about an hour north of Seattle, the 300-acre family farm specializing in heirloom pumpkins, gourds, and squashes brims with magical potential this time of year. “I love fall—the colors, scents, landscape, and folklore,” says co-owner Eddie Gordon, whose grandparents bought the place in 1932 and whose parents grew a range of vegetables there. Today, he runs it with his older brother, Todd. One of his fondest childhood memories is of their mom, who still lives there at age…
