We Found the OG Tech Influencer

We Found the OG Tech Influencer

This year marks PCMag’s 40th anniversary, and we’ve got loads of great stories celebrating our nostalgia—an illustrated timeline, an “ode to PCMag” by long-time Editor-in-Chief Michael Miller, an interview with Bill Gates, and many more. Another legacy is our faithful crowd of longtime readers, many of whom have contacted us with kudos and reminiscences. One such reader is also—just maybe—the original tech influencer. Brian Dewey has had a long career in technology: He’s retired now but worked for IBM Global Services, Time Warner Cable, and myriad other companies. In 1987, five years after PC Magazine was founded, young Brian was employed by MONY Financial Services. His title? “PC Brand Specifier.” Brian Dewey’s employer and job title back then are both easy to find by paging through the May 31, 1988 print issue…

Felice di essere parisienne

«Sto aspettando un nuovo mondo. So che arriverà». Perché mi faceva dimenticare i problemi.

BETWEEN LIFE AND LOSS

IN 2005, MY BOYFRIEND discovered a lump on my breast. I went in to have it checked out and the doctor recommended a biopsy. The lump turned out to be benign fatty tissue, but the sample revealed that I had lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), the presence of abnormal cells in my breast lobules. At the time it was also called stage 0 breast cancer, and I was assured that it was not cancer but rather an early indicator for developing it later. The doctor suggested I start taking Tamoxifen [a drug recommended to reduce breast cancer risk in pre- and perimenopausal women by blocking the effects of estrogen in breast tissue] as a preventative measure—a recommendation I declined to follow because I read that the medication could interfere with…

Questione di PRIORITÀ

Professionalità e storie (in)visibili.

Healed Enough to WALK Away

Healed Enough to WALK Away

ALEX SMITH COULD STAND RIGHT THERE FOREVER, TOES SPOILED BY THE PLUSH STRIP OF EMERALD GREEN UNDERFOOT AT HIS HAWAIIAN HIDEAWAY. “Some of the best grass in the world,” he says, awestruck, like he’s walking on cashmere. His blue eyes scan the tropical paradise spread before him, waves crashing into white sand and black lava rocks on a March afternoon so perfect that blissful undersells it. That afternoon he orders a beef-and-rice bowl at the oceanside restaurant in this private enclave that features not one but two golf courses. A thatched roof covers the table, which is near a pond stocked with exotic fish. The waitress says something about honey and beekeepers, but it’s hard to follow while staring at Smith’s uncovered right leg, the one that snapped and shattered on a…

Genesis GV 80

Genesis GV 80

In four short years of existence, Genesis has now won two 10Best awards. Clearly, the brand has our attention, even if the general public has no clue what to make of it. Like the other Genesis models, the GV80 has a not-so-subtle winged badge on its nose. If passersby confuse those wings with Bentley’s Flying B, so be it. The GV80’s design and presence only add to the ruse. It shouldn’t be surprising that Genesis found inspiration in Bentley. After all, the Hyundai Group employs former Bentley design chief Luc Donckerwolke, and while styling is subjective, it doesn’t feel like much of a stretch to say that the GV80 is more attractive than a Bentley Bentayga. If you’re thinking, “Well, anyone can rent a tuxedo,” the GV80 has real substance beneath its…

death of a lobsterman

HEIDI GUILFORD RODE SHOTGUN IN HER BOYFRIEND’ S white Dodge Charger. Her stepsister and a couple friends sat in the back, with the windows rolled down for the smokers. It was a cool night in June—sweatshirt weather—an unremarkable Sunday on an island off the coast of Maine. They could have been in any small town, just about anyplace. A loud engine, blaring music, laughing shouts from the front seat to the back. And all around them: Quiet Heidi knew every inch of these roads. They all did. They’d grown up on this island, Vinalhaven, fifteen miles out to sea by ferry, a rock in the ocean that the glaciers hadn’t quite smoothed over. Seven miles by five, population 1,200, give or take, and triple that when the summer people showed up. They took…

MICROSTORIA

How to sit correctly at the piano

How to sit correctly at the piano

Before you start learning how to play the piano, the first thing you need to do is ensure you have the correct sitting position. Posture is very important for piano players, as it ensures you have the maximum level of flexibility to reach all the keys, and it also helps you learn the proper technique for striking the keys. On the path to perfect posture, one of the major things you’ll need is a proper seat. If you’re slumped down below the piano you’ll struggle to learn the basics, while if you’re propped high in the air you won’t be able to hit the keys properly. You don’t need anything really expensive; the best thing to have is an adjustable seat, but you can also just use pillows and cushions to…

Model Citizen

Liya Kebede Founder and creative director of Lemlem, model, and actress New York City and Paris In a Lemlem dress, you can’t help but float through summer. Whisper-light and awash in happy, sun-drenched colors, each one is hand-woven on wooden looms by African artisans, following centuries-old traditions. The brand’s founder is Ethiopian model and maternal-health advocate Liya Kebede, who rose to fame in the early aughts as the face of Tom Ford’s Gucci and the first Black spokesmodel for Estée Lauder. On a trip to her hometown of Addis Ababa around that time, she noticed a distressing drop in the demand for traditional garments, and got busy. “Weaving is a craft that has been passed through generations and holds deep cultural significance,” says Kebede, who set her mind to preserving the art,…

Vulnerable—and Vigilant

Vulnerable—and Vigilant

Over 35 years of living with bipolar, I’ve facilitated countless support groups, written numerous articles, and delivered many speeches. People sometimes (mistakenly) presume that I’ve got it all together. They think I’ve won the battle against bipolar. That’s simply not true! It’s dangerous to dismiss or diminish the difficulty of life with this diagnosis. Suggesting that people like me have “beaten” bipolar can lead to complacency. The focus should be on managing our condition. If we don’t acknowledge our vulnerabilities and remain vigilant, we can get tripped up by thinking bipolar no longer needs to be on our radar. Even after all this time, I have to persistently pursue proven approaches—like keeping my sleep schedule in check and my thoughts based in reality. When I don’t pay attention to staying stable, I…

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition: A Muscled-Up Middle Child

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition: A Muscled-Up Middle Child

It’s been one heck of a year in the world of desktop graphics cards. From silicon shortages to cryptocurrency craziness, the average price of a graphics card in 2021 has surged past all expectations, with models both used and new selling for multiples more than the original prices, even years after their initial release. Realities of the current marketplace aside, though, we’re here to talk about the objective performance of the latest object of desire for GPU shoppers (and likely newest target for scalpers), the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, and how it stacks up against its own (hopefully, one day!) objective manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,199. PROS: Beautiful, functional design, like other Founders Edition cards. Low-noise operation, even under stress. Compact profile given the raw muscle. Improves upon original…

How to Take Better Breaks

How to Take Better Breaks

You’ll never be the best you can be if you aim to be 100% productive every minute of your workday. It’s impossible to work nonstop without paying a price, be it a decrease in quality, output, or safety. We all need breaks. If you’re new (or newish) to working from home, you might be tempted to compare your at-home break schedule with one you used to follow in your place of business. For instance, you might be thinking, “Would I have spent 10 minutes opening a package if I had been at work? or “I’m not usually this distracted when I’m at work.” Don’t do it. WHY YOU SHOULDN’T COMPARE THE BEFORE AND AFTER First, anyone who has worked remotely for a long time will tell you there’s no sense in comparing your…

HOW TO USE SNAP LAYOUTS IN WINDOWS 11

HOW TO USE SNAP LAYOUTS IN WINDOWS 11

Windows 11 may be better known for its centered taskbar and rounded window borders, but the new Snap Layouts feature (sometimes also called Snap Assist) might be a more useful UI innovation. Windows, as its name implies, has long been excellent at managing and rearranging program windows, but Snap Layouts elevate the operating system (OS) to the next level. HOW DO SNAP LAYOUTS WORK? To get started with this new productivity tool, you simply hover the mouse over the Maximize icon in a program window’s upper-right corner. You’ll see a choice of layouts, like this: Note that not every application supports this feature. In my testing, the Firefox and Spotify programs showed only the old Maximize option. But you can still position them within a Snap Layout after starting the process with an…

Razer Orochi V2 Wireless Gaming Mouse: Game on the Go

Razer Orochi V2 Wireless Gaming Mouse: Game on the Go

Pocket mice are typically associated with productivity, given their portable, lightweight designs that let you work in an airport, coffee shop, or office. The Razer Orochi V2 offers that same capability, but for gaming. It’s a small, wireless mouse, but with the sensor and software support of a Razer gaming mouse. The Orochi V2 isn’t a full-on replacement for a standard-size gaming mouse, but it’s convenient as a backup input device for your laptop bag. PROS: Lightweight. Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless support. Has HyperSpeed multi-device support. Supports AA and AAA batteries. Dongle storage. CONS: Can’t add a AA and AAA at the same time for max battery life. Small design is still less comfortable than a regular-sized mouse. Lacks RGB lighting. BOTTOM LINE: Featuring a lightweight design and HyperSpeed multi-device wireless support, the…

Asus ROG Zephyrus G14: Blazing-Fast Gaming Machine

Asus ROG Zephyrus G14: Blazing-Fast Gaming Machine

When the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 first launched last year, we praised it for combining a 14-inch display (then rare among gaming laptops) with Nvidia GeForce RTX 20-Series power and AMD Ryzen processing at a sweet price. The updated 2021 G14 uses the same design, but pumps things up to RTX 30-Series and newer Ryzen 5000 chips. Our test unit also includes a 1440p display and 32GB of memory, so the boosted price of our model isn’t as strong of a value as the original G14, but the entry-point configuration (which still features an RTX 3060) is an attractive proposition. Also, the market for 14-inch gaming laptops has expanded. Competing 14-inchers are now popping up from most of the usual suspects (the Razer Blade 14 is our top pick), making the…

Around the House: It’s a Tidy Life

SWAPPING ROOMS INSPIRED TYLER MOORE TO GET RID OF CLUTTER. He and his wife, Emily, live with their three daughters in a 750-square-foot railroad-style apartment in Queens, New York, so space is in short supply. When they decided to trade their bedroom (the largest) with their daughters in order to give them more play space, they understood a decluttering was needed. Inspired by Marie Kondo’s KonMari method, they edited down clothing, books, paper, miscellaneous items, and finally sentimental belongings. With Tyler’s background as a grade-school teacher and Emily’s as a pediatric occupational therapist, they found ways to add kid-friendly strategies to the KonMari method, and soon Tyler started sharing their decluttering philosophy on thetidydad.com and @tidydad. The family now keeps “just enough” stuff to prevent clutter from coming back into…

The Diesel-9 Era in CCS

The Diesel-9 Era in CCS

FROM THE LATE 1960S until the mid-2010s, the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 was a staple in every major Venezuelan airline. From the long-gone yet always-remembered Avensa (VE) and VIASA (VA) to today’s Aeropostal (VH) and Laser (QL), the ‘Diesel-9’ was the backbone of many a fleet, with generations of Pilots and Cabin and Maintenance Crews familiarized and trained to fly this piece of history. But let’s fly back to the early 2000s, when the DC-9 was King in Simon Bolívar International Airport (CCS). In 2004, two variants of the Diesel 9—the -30 and -50 series—were common on domestic and Caribbean routes, with Aeropostal, and Aserca Airlines (R7), leading the operations with this aircraft type. The largest operator of the type in Venezuela was Aeropostal, its first DC-9-10s having been delivered as early as…

The Nicest Breeze — A220 First Class

ON JUNE 8, 2022, Breeze Airways officially launched transcontinental service using the Airbus A220-300 from Richmond (RIC), the capital of Virginia, to San Francisco (SFO), a prime tourism destination and home to many technology companies. The airline’s founder and CEO, David Neeleman, was on board the former Bombardier CS300 to mark the occasion, and the flight was mostly full. The airline hoped it would be the first of many such long-distance trips. Breeze has plans for 18 transcontinental routes using the A220 to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Breeze started service in May 2021, primarily in the Eastern and Southeastern United States, flying Embraer E190s and E195s (see Airways, July-August 2021). With the delivery of the A220, the airline can extend its cross-country reach to the West Coast. Breeze…

FIXING FORENSICS

FIXING FORENSICS

Statistics research doesn’t usually require weapons. But to develop their latest algorithm, Iowa State University statisticians Alicia Carriquiry and Heike Hofmann needed thousands of bullets fired from a small collection of handguns. So they put the firepower in their own hands, and hit the range. criteria that distinguish science from speculation. That so-called sorcery has destroyed lives. The For nearly a year, Carriquiry and Hofmann, supervised by sheriff’s deputies, unloaded round after round into a tube with Kevlar fibers. After each shot, they fished out the bullet and tucked it in a plastic baggie labeled with critical data: gun, barrel, shot number. “If you had asked me a few years ago whether I was going to be doing this type of data collection, I would have said, ‘You’re crazy,’” says Carriquiry. It’s not…

E STREET TO EASY STREET

Forty years ago, after returning from a two-year tour of the United States and Europe to support his first No. 1 album, The River, Bruce Springsteen arrived home at his rented New Jersey ranch house, not far from where he grew up in the blue-collar town of Freehold, and dropped $10,000 on his first extravagant purchase: a 1982 Chevy Z28 Camaro. “I’d never owned a new car in my life,” he wrote about the splurge in his 2016 autobiography, Born to Run. “I’d never spent $10,000 on myself. It felt as conspicuous as if I were driving a solid gold Rolls-Royce.” Today, the man who once sang of being haunted by the ghost of Tom Joad can afford a fleet of luxury cars. In December, the Boss sold the masters and publishing…

Igor Bukhman awoke on the morning of February 24 in his West London home to a text message from the manager of one of Playrix’s Ukrainian studios: “It’s started,” read the text, which followed with a photo of the manager’s wife, cradling a shotgun, and their daughter sheltering in their basement from Russian airstrikes. Bukhman flicked on the TV. The invasion was all over it. He skimmed news apps on his phone. “We didn’t really believe it would happen,” says Bukhman, a Russia-born billionaire who has thousands of employees working on mobile games in Russia and Ukraine. While he reeled in shock, his Ukrainian staff swung into action. Slack channels normally busy with collegial chat, funny memes and updates about the company’s stable of games now thrummed with talk of evacuations and aid…

THE MENOPAUSE REVOLUTION

AFTER JENNIFER LOPEZ performed at the 2020 Super Bowl, a meme sprung up that swiftly went viral. One half of a split screen showed Blanche Devereaux from The Golden Girls, sporting a dowdy hairstyle and fussy blouse; the other half showed a tawny, tousled J.Lo, nimbly pole dancing onstage in a scanty sequined bodysuit. Both, it said, were 50. In the 1980s, Blanche was the face of the woman in this life stage. Today, it’s J.Lo. In the past few years, there has been a gratifying cultural shift in attitude—but menopause remains a dismayingly taboo subject. Before a girl gets her period, she receives “the talk.” During pregnancy, a woman is barraged with advice from friends, family, and doctors. Now raise your hand if you received “the talk” about menopause. Anyone? No?…

L’olezzo. Ma eccoci…

CHINA RUSHES TO CATCH UP ON CHIPS

CHINA RUSHES TO CATCH UP ON CHIPS

China’s aspiration to become a true technological rival to the U.S. faces a foundational challenge: The country doesn’t control the semiconductors that are the building blocks for everything from smart-phones to automated cars. In 2020 the Chinese economy spent $350 billion buying chips based largely on Western technology—more than it spent on oil. For decades the government in Beijing has tried, and mostly failed, to create a national operation for designing and manufacturing cutting-edge chips on its own. The country does have a local chip industry, but the most advanced products remain the domain of such companies as Intel, Samsung, and TSMC. China’s worries grew during the Trump administration, when the U.S. effectively destroyed Huawei Technologies Co.’s global smartphone business by forcing chip suppliers to cut it off, undermining the company’s ability…

GOODBYE, ISS. HELLO, PRIVATE SPACE STATIONS

GOODBYE, ISS. HELLO, PRIVATE SPACE STATIONS

FROM ITS INCEPTION, THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE Station (ISS) was an improbable machine. As big as a football field and made of 17 pressurized modules and a pair of massive solar wings, the $150 billion spacecraft has been an instrument of research, exploration, and politics, built and maintained by 15 nations, led by the U.S. and Russia. Even as the war in Ukraine rages, NASA and Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, continue to cooperate in space. But what politics cannot break, time and age can. The ISS is getting old. Its first component was launched nearly 24 years ago, and orbital hardware can last only so long before equipment breaks down, small air leaks appear, and the constant punishment both by micrometeorites and the continual thermal cycling the station goes through on…

FALSE ALARM

THE DAY AFTER James Harden was traded from the Nets to the 76ers, a story started circulating about the breaking point between the 2018 MVP and Brooklyn guard Kyrie Irving. It posited that Irving beat Harden in one-on-one almost daily and once even called his teammate “washed” after locking Harden up in a scrimmage. The tale spread across the internet—Google “Kyrie Irving James Harden washed” and you’ll get just fewer than two million results—and eventually onto the airwaves of ESPN, being referenced three times, by two different analysts. And yet, the incidents in question never actually occurred. Instead, the report originated on Twitter, from a tweet and accompanying graphic that received more than 40,000 likes. While the initial information was attributed to a “Brooklyn Nets executive,” its actual creator was @BallsackSports, an…

«I precedenti proprietari avevano trasformato…

48 HOURS IN… Triora

Jane Keightley climbs into the Ligurian Hills… Triora is famous in Italy for the witch trials which were held here in the 16th century, but beyond this it has a remarkably rich and varied history for a remote mountain village some 25km from the sea. Situated in the highest valley in Liguria, and not far from the French border, it is worth visiting for its setting alone. It is a member of the Touring Club Italiano’s “Orange Flag” club, which means it is one of best places in Italy to visit. Apart from its intriguing history it is a magnificent area for walking. I was staying in Triora and I soon realised what a unique place it was. Perched up high, the village seems to tumble down the mountainside. Once you enter…

In ammollo.

Andra Day

Andra Day

When she landed the leading role in the movie The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Andra Day must have been ecstatic, right? After all, Billie Holiday is her idol—she even took her stage name from the singer, whose nickname was Lady Day. Well, not exactly. “It was horrifying. No, terrible,” Andra, 36, says. “I was dead scared. I’m not an actor, and I felt totally out of my depth. I’m such a fan of hers, and the last thing I wanted to do is mess up the story of this woman I love.” In fact, what Andra did in her debut film role was just the opposite. Her powerful portrayal brought Holiday’s story brilliantly to life, and she won a Golden Globe, received an Oscar nomination, and earned the admiration and…

WEST COAST MONEY MACHINES

WEST COAST MONEY MACHINES

Conventional wisdom says that when passenger revenues begin to drop, all a railroad can do is go before the Interstate Commerce Commission and ask for a rate increase. It’s also commonly argued that empty trains, not low fares, are the prime reason for insufficient revenues. Out on the West Coast there is a railroad that takes the latter view. It is the Southern Pacific, and it is demonstrating that it is quite possible to operate luxury trains at low rates and, by keeping an eye on the expected loadings, to change the consist to that happy point where the train is comfortably crowded rather than half full. This cuts empty carmiles and allows SP to show an operating profit on these passenger operations. Of course, SP has an enviable setup for its…

BEHOLD! YOUR ELECTRIC FUTURE… HAS A DARK SIDE

TRUE BELIEVERS ALWAYS imagine that a new technology will lead to an explosion of human creativity, corporate transparency, and personal freedom. The mighty success of Elon Musk’s Tesla has many fantasizing that the automobile industry’s future will be different and more high-toned than its often sordid past. But many of the key building blocks of internally combusted automotive history—from wishful thinking to deceit and fraud—remain as the brave new electric world arrives. At the turn of the 20th century, hopeful makers of the newfangled automobile sprang up seemingly by the thousands. The majority, overhyped and undercapitalized, were headed for failure. While investors big and small piled in, baldfaced bounders and stock-market swindlers competed with well-meaning but misguided venturers for the money. Distress sell-offs and crash-and-burn bankruptcies became the rule, not the…

The Helping Hormone

The Helping Hormone

EVEN IF IT’S BEEN a while since health class, you likely know how estrogen impacts reproductive health. Its levels rise as we reach puberty; then each month it surges, causing the uterine lining to prep for a potential fertilized egg, and drops, kick-starting menstruation. As the years go on, levels ricochet up and down in perimenopause and drop at menopause. And along the way, estrogen gets blamed for breakouts and breakups, mood dips and weight gains. But what else does the hormone do? The better question may be “What doesn’t it do?” “Estrogen touches basically every cell,” says Jen Gunter, MD, a gynecologist and author of The Menopause Manifesto (Citadel, 2021). “Until recently, we didn’t recognize its importance beyond reproduction,” adds Elizabeth Poynor, MD, a gynecologic surgeon and founder of the…

Hands on With macOS Monterey: Improvements Abound

Hands on With macOS Monterey: Improvements Abound

The public beta of macOS Monterey, released by Apple in early July, doesn’t look surprisingly new. Exceptions include Safari, which gets a dynamically resizing tab bar and other conveniences, and FaceTime, which gets a background-blurring portrait mode and screen-sharing features. As you get more familiar with Monterey, however, you’ll find improvements and conveniences everywhere and may wonder how you managed without them. This is because Apple’s annual updates to the Mac operating system tend to have a regular rhythm. Massive updates arrive on even-numbered years: Big Sur, for example, the 2020 update to macOS that was also the first version that ran on Apple Silicon hardware. Updates in odd-numbered years, such as Monterey, look more or less like the previous version but come with under-the-hood improvements that may do more for…

Corel VideoStudio Ultimate: Easy, Fun Video Editing

Corel VideoStudio Ultimate: Easy, Fun Video Editing

There’s no end to innovation in home video technology, whether that means 3D, 4K, or 360-degree VR video—and the software you use to edit all that content must keep up. Corel VideoStudio Ultimate does so admirably, and is chockablock with powerful video-editing tools. It lets you perform stop motion, multicam, motion tracking, time remapping, video masking, and audio ducking. Since the program is already so packed with capabilities, the 2021 release, while adding a few new features, is mostly about performance and reliability improvements, which were much needed based on my previous testing. The result is a solid, impressive product with a clear, simple interface that’s loaded with fun editing tools. PROS: Clear, simple interface. Extremely fast rendering. Support for 360-degree VR, 4K Ultra HD, and 3D media. Multipoint Motion tracking.…

HP Envy 16: An All-Round Performer

HP Envy 16: An All-Round Performer

Officially, HP’s Envy laptops are only its second-best consumer models, slotted between affordable Pavilions and flagship Spectres—but you’d never know it from looking at the new Envy 16. A desktop replacement that straddles the content creation and gaming segments, it’s available with a blazing Intel Core i9 processor and a snazzy OLED display, as well as luxuries like a 5-megapixel webcam. It’s neither cheap nor feather-light, and its midrange Nvidia graphics processor won’t satisfy fanatic gamers, but it’s an attractive all-around performer that costs hundreds less than a comparably equipped Dell XPS 15. Indeed, it’s impressive enough to replace the XPS 15 as our Editors’ Choice holder among premium creative laptops. PROS • Gorgeous 4K OLED touch screen • Fancy 5-megapixel webcam • Great performance and battery life • Robust GeForce RTX 3060 GPU CONS • A…

MasterClass vs. Skillshare: Which Service Fits Your Learning Goals?

MasterClass vs. Skillshare: Which Service Fits Your Learning Goals?

Apples are better than oranges. I kid: The entire point of the expression “comparing apples to oranges” is that you can’t directly compare the two. Sure, they’re both fruits, but they serve different purposes. Apples are better for making cider; oranges are better for juicing and mixing with champagne or vodka. I suppose you could also eat either of them. Similarly, comparing Skillshare with MasterClass directly is difficult, and a more fruitful exercise would be to point out how they’re different and under which conditions you might choose one over the other. Yes, they both nominally offer online classes, but the two companies use the word “class” in different ways. And they’re both very good at what they do. They’re both Editors’ Choice winners among online learning services. But what they’re…

Razer Viper V2 Pro: A Perfect Mouse for Esports

You can’t talk about gaming mice without talking about Razer. In 2019, we raved about the wireless Razer Viper Ultimate, a high-end spinoff of the light, fast, and ambidextrous Razer Viper. Complete with all the esports fixings you could ask for in a wireless gaming mouse, the Ultimate impressed us with its fabulous feature set, despite its high price. Three years later, the company has taken another step toward wireless gaming domination with the Viper V2 Pro, which upgrades the Viper Ultimate in almost every way. The new mouse is no cheaper than its predecessor, despite a simple USB-C cable replacing the latter’s charging dock, but it easily earns Editors’ Choice honors. PROS • Clean, minimalist design • Excellent sensor • Durable optical switches • Lightweight CONS • Expensive • No RGB lighting • Fewer buttons THE BOTTOM LINE Tons of…

Polaroid Now+: A Terrific Tool

Polaroid is following last year’s Now instant camera with a Bluetooth-connected model, fittingly called the Now+ ($149.99). For an extra $50, the Now+ includes features artistic photographers will love, including app-based manual control and a set of creative filters. Polaroid is also back to making interesting film stocks beyond the basic color and black-and-white options, adding some appeal for out-of-the-box photographers working in the instant medium. It remains more of a niche choice for artists and is pricier to buy and feed compared with our Editors’ Choice winner, the Fujifilm Instax SQ1. But if you’re in that niche, be happy to know that the Now+ lives up to the Polaroid name. PROS: Big, square instant photos. Color, black-and-white, and limited-run films. Easy one-button operation. Smartphone app for creative control. Tripod socket.…

Is Quantum Computing a Bubble Ready to Burst?

The massive intersection of James Avenue and East Boughton Road in Bolingbrook, Illinois, looks like many other crossroads in suburban America. A drive-through Starbucks keeps watch over 15 lanes of turning and merging mid-size SUVs, most headed for the sprawling parking lots of the Promenade shopping mall to the south, a few others en route to the shooting gallery and gun shop across Interstate 355 to the east. Few of the people in the SUVs realize they’re driving over part of America’s blossoming research into quantum information technology. Beneath the interstate, entangled photons—quantum particles moving at the speed of light—are teleporting to and from the Argonne National Laboratory in the next town over, through repurposed fiber-optic cables that make up one of the longest land-based quantum networks in the nation. Researchers hope…

Flying Freight: The Development of America’s All-cargo Airlines

Flying Freight: The Development of America’s All-cargo Airlines

WE TAKE THE TRANSPORTATION OF GOODS by air for granted. But air freight did not blossom into a full-fledged industry until after World War II. AIR EXPRESS America’s airlines got a kickstart from the federal government in 1925 with the passage of the Contract Air Mail Act (also known as the Kelly Act). This legislation allowed the Post Office Department to farm out contracts for transporting air mail to private operators. The nation’s fledgling airlines were soon carrying passengers, mail, and express. Express refers to parcels that require expedited transport (note that the terms express and parcel have carried over to today’s giant transporters, Federal Express and United Parcel Service). Parcels—small packages—were about all that could fit in the baggage and cargo compartments of the airliners of the 1920s and ‘30s. The average weight…

Several years ago, Sushma Subramanian was procrastinating on her work when she noticed her desk was a bit wobbly. It was a rather mundane moment, she recalls. But as she began to fiddle with the tabletop, the science journalist found herself noting how the experience felt: the grain of the wood against her fingers, the pinching of her skin and the sensation of her muscles straining to lift the desk. As Subramanian explains in her book, How to Feel: The Science and Meaning of Touch (Columbia University Press, 2021), it was a moment when she began to consider how little she knew about this multifaceted sense. The questions kept forming, eventually leading Subramanian to write an article for Discover in 2015 about the development of tactile touch screens. In her latest work,…

Tom Brady & Gisele Bündchen: Why Their Marriage Shattered

Tom Brady & Gisele Bündchen: Why Their Marriage Shattered

He’s known as the National Football League’s pretty much undisputed GOAT, but lately, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady isn’t racking up the wins. His team has lost five of their first eight games, a career worst for the seven-time Super Bowl champ, now in his 23rd season in the NFL. And Brady hasn’t been hiding his frustration. During a week 5 game against the Atlanta Falcons, he got in the face of an official and dropped an F-bomb. And after getting sacked twice during an Oct. 17 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers (which the Bucs lost 20-18), he unleashed a tirade against his offensive line. Then during an Oct. 23 face-off with the Carolina Panthers (another loss) in Charlotte, N.C., Brady uncharacteristically kept to himself on the sideline. “Every…

The secret lives of CELEBRITY STARS

The secret lives of CELEBRITY STARS

Among the Milky Way’s 100 billion stellar denizens, there is no shortage of showoffs. Some of these heavenly bodies have long been in the limelight, like planetary nebulae, featuring beguiling billows of expanding gases. Others, such as luminous blue variables, are new to the scene and already flaming out, wildly unstable and burning with the intensity of millions of Suns as they expand and contract. Many of these stars will end their lives in explosive supernovae — living fast and dying young, briefly igniting our skies with the brilliance of entire galaxies before disappearing forever. For decades, astronomers thought they understood the galaxy’s stars fairly well, and could trace their dramatic story arcs with charts and models. Based on observations and calculations, it seemed that stars cycled through life phases as predictably…

L’AMBIZIONE DI GIULIA

L’AMBIZIONE DI GIULIA

DESKTOP VS MOBILE: UPCOMING INNOVATIONS CHANGE THE GAME

Over the past decade, Apple has revolutionized personal technology with the iPhone and iPad, but the Mac range has seen stunted growth as a result. As the giant pivots towards its personal computing arm once more with the launch of the M1 chip, it’s time to prepare for innovations that could change the way you work for years to come. CHANGING TIMES FOR THE MAC For the fiscal year that ended September 26, 2020, Apple posted a net profit of $57.4 billion on revenue of $274.5 billion, meaning the company managed to maintain an average sales growth of 23 percent over almost two decades. Fueled by the launch and success of the iPhone as well as the iPad and more recently Apple Watch, the company has taken a major change in direction…

Pochi…

THE STORY OF THE UNIVERSE

The year 2009 could go down in the astronomical textbooks as the one when a revolution in our understanding of the Universe began. The protagonist at the centre of this upheaval was not a person but a machine: a space probe called Planck. Named after the great German physicist Max Planck, the spacecraft was launched by the European Space Agency that year and was tasked with detecting the ‘blueprint’ of the Universe – capturing a snapshot of the seeds of the stars and galaxies that surround us today. Prior to its launch, cosmologists had spent over a century constructing mathematical theories to describe the story of the Universe, from the earliest moments to the present day. But analysis of the data returned by Planck has revealed a number of plot holes…

HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE MY FOX NEWS PARENTS

HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE MY FOX NEWS PARENTS

MANY PEOPLE I KNOW HAVE PARENTS WHO are suffering from Early Fox News Dementia, ranting about the perfidy of Anthony Fauci and the possibility of catching critical race theory from an open jar of mayonnaise. But at the same time, they want to give their children parental advice and guidance, though now through the prism of their separate bespoke realities. They want to remain parents, but only on their own racist and hurtful terms. My counsel to these children—stemming from what my closest friends and I experienced, all of us immigrants in our forties from different parts of the world—is to orphan yourself. A few years after graduating from college, I decided to do just that. Not to become an orphan per se, because my mother and father remained thankfully alive,…

DOTTORI IN CAMPO

DOTTORI IN CAMPO

Staging you can live with

One of the most popular approaches to layout planning is a point-to-point railroad that runs from a staging yard over a modeled section and then into another (or a combined) staging yard. Typically, the staging areas exhibit very basic construction – a slab of plywood with parallel tracks. Moreover, we often install them in out of the way, hard-to-reach locations, usually underneath the layout or in a back room. I’ve even seen one in the rafters, above the ceiling tile. Staging yards are usually not much to look at, which is one of the reasons they end up where they do. From staging to stunning When Bill and Mary Miller were planning their On3 Colorado & Southern layout, they employed the point-to-point concept. The staging areas at each end included a three-track…

MARATHON MAN

“YOU NEED TO BECOME PART OF THE FASHION SYSTEM WITHOUT BECOMING TRENDY.” TO ACHIEVE LONGEVITY AS A SUCCESSFUL FASHION DESIGNER YOU MUST B ABLE TO RUN A MARATHON OF CREATIVE SPRINTS. “FASHION IS ALL ABOUT HARD WORK. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you are not willing to commit to that marathon, then it will not work,” he says. “And another thing is that you cannot go into fashion as a fame game. As my dad always reminds me, fashion is a rag trade.” We’re chatting in the Islington-fringes HQ of Anderson’s eponymous company and there’s no time to squander: the founder and creative director of JW Anderson since 2008 (and Loewe since 2013), the Derryborn wunderkind oversees some 16 collections a year. If you don’t already know that…

Falling for Fruit

Posh Spice Poached pears are an elegant dessert on their own. But place them on a layer of velvety almond-frangipane custard atop delicate pastry, and they’re fit for tea with the Bridgertons. The key to this labor of love is breaking it down into a few steps. You can make and freeze the laminated pastry dough up to two weeks ahead of time. Poach the pears the day before assembling the tarts (or at least four hours prior, so they can soak up the lemon-zest, cinnamon, and vanilla flavors in the syrup). When you’re ready to bake, thaw the dough, make rounds with a cookie cutter, mix and spread on the frangipane cream, and nestle in the main events. Forward Flip Consider this another great reason to go apple-picking this September—or a fun…

How to keep kids safe

How to keep kids safe

With the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine newly given emergency-use authorization for children 5 to 11, many parents are asking the question: Should we vaccinate our kids? Many of them may have already made up their mind. Some of those arguing against vaccinating kids make the case that COVID-19 typically does not cause severe illness among children with healthy immune systems. Thankfully, purely as a percentage of total cases, it does hold true. To date, around 6 million children in the U.S. have contracted this coronavirus, which has led to more than 65,000 hospitalizations and 897 deaths. These numbers pale in comparison to the over 3 million hospitalizations among U.S. adults, and a staggering 754,000 deaths. The low rates of complications and severe illness from COVID-19 in children are the exact data needed to…

Hisense 350-Sq. Ft. Window Air Conditioner (AW0821CW1W): Smart AC

Hisense 350-Sq. Ft. Window Air Conditioner (AW0821CW1W): Smart AC

The Hisense 350-sq. ft. Window Air Conditioner is a reasonably priced Wi-Fi-enabled window AC unit that you can control with your voice, your phone, or the included remote. It’s easy to install and did an admirable job of cooling in our tests. It doesn’t offer power usage reports or compatibility with Apple HomeKit and IFTTT like some other smart air conditioners we’ve tested, but it also costs less than many 8,000-BTU models, making it an affordable option for small to medium spaces. PROS: Reasonably priced. Easy to install. Fast cooling. Voice control. Relatively quiet. CONS: Lacks usage reporting. Doesn’t support HomeKit or IFTTT. BOTTOM LINE: The Hisense 350-Sq. Ft. Window Air Conditioner is a smart AC unit that can be controlled by your phone, voice, or remote, and does a fine job of…

Hands On With the OnePlus Watch: Lots of Promise for Just $159

Hands On With the OnePlus Watch: Lots of Promise for Just $159

I’ll admit, I was pretty skeptical before unboxing the first smartwatch from OnePlus, aptly named the OnePlus Watch. At $159, it’s less than half the price of our Editors’ Choice winner, the Apple Watch Series 6 (which starts at $399). And while it doesn’t work with iPhones, it offers many of the same features as Apple’s market-leading wearable. So far, my skepticism appears to have been unfounded. The OnePlus Watch offers a large color touch screen, built-in GPS, 2GB of storage, a 402mAh battery that promises two weeks of power, and the ability to make and receive calls. It also has plenty of health and fitness features, including support for more than 110 workout types, automatic workout detection for jogging and running, rapid-heart-rate alerts, guided breathing exercises, stress detection, and the…

How to Improve Workplace Communication

How to Improve Workplace Communication

How we communicate and the method we choose can make all the difference to the outcome. Workers have long been frustrated when the mode of communication is wrong for the message, because it’s ineffective, reduces productivity, or wastes people’s time. WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM ALL-REMOTE ORGANIZATIONS? Remote organizations must necessarily think harder about workplace communication than in-person organizations, because they don’t have the same options as in-person teams. Remote organizations, which tend to be younger, also don’t typically have the same cultural baggage that older organizations do. Older organizations are more likely to be set in their ways. A classic example is a company whose culture gives undue significance to in-person meetings. People believe that the in-person meeting is the best way to, for example, kick off a project or regularly check…

Sony Inzone M9: Excellent Visuals

Sony Inzone M9: Excellent Visuals

With the advent of next-generation consoles such as the Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X, console gamers are now able to experience what PC gamers have enjoyed for many years: playing games at high frame rates and high resolutions. Caveats abound, but that hasn’t stopped classic monitor manufacturers from putting the needs of consoles first—and the latest to do so is the PlayStation manufacturer itself. The Sony Inzone is a new division focused on developing gaming gear, and one of the first products to hit shelves is the Sony Inzone M9, a 27-inch 144Hz 4K gaming monitor looking to find its footing in the under-$1,000 4K-elite gaming category. PROS • Eye-catching design • Exclusive features for PlayStation 5 • Very low input lag • HDMI 2.1 and USB-C ports included CONS • Expensive • Sound quality…

HP Chromebook x2 (2021): A Clever Combination

HP Chromebook x2 (2021): A Clever Combination

So you’re in the market for a detachable 2-in-1—a tablet you can use either by itself or with a keyboard and stylus? The Apple 10.9-inch iPad Air is a good choice—in fact, a PCMag Editors’ Choice winner—at $599. But if you’re willing to think different, HP’s 11-inch Chromebook x2 costs the same—including twice the memory as well as the keyboard and pen that Apple will charge you an extra $428 for. Tablet shoppers rarely consider Chromebooks, but the HP x2 favors the bold. It doesn’t perform as well as comparably priced Chromebook laptops (and we still consider our Editors’ Choice favorite, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, a better value among Chromebook detachables), but it fills a nifty niche. PROS: Affordable price includes pen and keyboard cover. Available 4G mobile broadband. CONS: Tepid performance.…

How to Deal With a Swollen Laptop Battery

How to Deal With a Swollen Laptop Battery

Lithium-ion batteries pack an amazing punch for their size. They’re robust enough to run our laptops for hours on a single charge, they’re at the core of the latest smartphones, and they even serve as the power plant behind cutting-edge electric vehicles such as the Tesla line. But lithium-ion batteries do have limits. Given how powerful laptops have become in the last few years, we’re relying on our machines for longer than ever. That has implications for batteries: They’re in service a lot longer, too. And sometimes, that means they show the limits of their technology. You may have had this happen to you: A laptop or phone you’ve had for years suddenly stops working, or maybe just starts showing some sign of internal physical swelling. The screen of your phone…

ECS Liva Z3: A Basic Mini-PC

ECS Liva Z3: A Basic Mini-PC

Been shopping for a tiny desktop around the internet? The ECS Liva Z3 is going to look pretty familiar. These days, mini PCs from many different manufacturers look like they all come off the same assembly line. Similar boxy profiles and basic black panels look like somebody copied-and-pasted the Intel NUC over and over again, with minor cosmetic changes here and there. The ECS Liva Z3 doesn’t stray from that template, looking just like the recently reviewed Beelink GK Mini and other NUC-like systems. But it still has something to offer: a low price that makes it a great budget choice. That’s provided, of course, that you can accept the performance limitations that come with the Liva Z3’s Pentium processor and eMMC storage. PROS: Small, easy to hide. Included mounting gear.…

Mohammed Taher – Aerodrome Systems Specialist, London Heathrow Airport

OK, you’ve always wanted to work at an airport. Who doesn’t? But, unfortunately, the Pilot thing didn’t work out, and you’re not quite the Flight Attendant type. What are your options? Baggage loader? Food service? Fueling planes? Security? BUT WHAT IF YOU ARE THE type who likes to figure out problems and find solutions so that the whole place runs like clockwork? If that sounds like you, how about being an airport engineer? Meet Mohammad Taher, an aerospace engineer who works as the Aerodrome Systems Specialist at London Heathrow (LHR). His job is to look after all the assets and the systems that are outside the terminal buildings, the equipment on the airfield that interacts with the aircraft—particularly from an electrical standpoint. He is the subject-matter expert, always looking for improvement, understanding the…

In Search of the Nudibranch

In Search of the Nudibranch

Slowly and deliberately, I searched shallow, underwater outcrops covered in colors. Weightless amidst the invisible push and pull of the current, pink coralline algae hung closely to rock surfaces or branched skyward against sporadic patches of neon green and glimmering iridescence. Shades of yellow, brown, white and orange flora began to appear as I drifted past micro-environments dictated by sunlight and structure. I allowed my scientific brain to go to work underwater, relying on one of my first developed senses: observation. I had come to this underwater world to seek out a nudibranch. I had heard of this elusive marine organism, but until recently, knew almost nothing about it. My goal at the moment was just to find one, to examine it with my own eyes. I’ve always been drawn to scuba…

A SCENT OF ADVENTURE

‘There is a really incredible natural scent to this place. Almost all of the doors are open most of the time – there is the salt of the sea, the freshness of the greenery,’ says Ben Gorham, founder of fragrance house Byredo, of his stunningly modern beach retreat on Gotland. ‘There’s also a faint whiff of sheep,’ he adds with a smile, referencing the animals that share their name with this remote dot of land in the Baltic Sea. The Swedish island may be best known for the medieval architecture of Visby, a picturesque town and UNESCO world heritage site, but it also has a wild side. It is the latter that attracted Ben to build a home here to share with his wife Natasha and their two daughters, Ines and…

DAOs Aren’t a Fad— They’re a Platform

“This is an incredibly risky move. I don’t know if I agree with this.” Erick Calderon, the founder of a company named Art Blocks in a risk-oblivious field, nonfungible tokens, was nonetheless concerned. It was February 2021, and Calderon was one of 59 investors who had banded together to potentially buy a rare set of 150 popular NFTs, CryptoPunks, directly from their producer, Larva Labs. The group, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) called Flamingo, had pooled $10 million and met weekly via Zoom (audio-only to protect those wanting anonymity) to figure out what to do with it. The CryptoPunk opportunity, at about four ether ($7,200 at the time) per punk, would eat 10% of that, which is partly why Calderon aired his concerns on the group’s Discord channel. The tension got thicker when…
